We are down to 25-28 players and top 10 are in the money. Im currently at a weak table 9 handed with the villain being the only player that stands out as someone that understands the game beyond your typical 1-2 player and have played with in previous tournaments.

Blinds 300/600/75 (1575) 9 handed and besides the villain, most stacks at this time are around 10-20bb and the villain and I are probably top 5 in chips at this time. I’m UTG+1 with AKo and I raise to 1500 out of my 48k stack and folds to the button who makes it 8000 out of his 35k stack and folds back to me. Shove, call or fold?

Usually this raise screams 10s or JJ, sometimes QQ or AK looking to take the pot down right away. With this villain, I could see him leveling me and making this raise with AA or KK hoping I shove or flat and leave him with a good SPR. Or he thinks I’m going to over play my hand and maybe shove AQs or 10s and would probably be getting the correct odds to call with JJ or AK.

Thanks for replies

Honestly, and I don’t know how correct this is, but I could see a case for folding here. I personally probably would stack off in this case, but I can see the argument for it. If there ever was a time to fold AKo preflop, it’s when you raised in EP and got 3bet HUGE from one of the biggest stacks like yourself who has position on you, while all the other stacks are short. However, I feel you are not quite close enough to the money to take those ICM considerations into hand, and still need to play like you want as many chips as possible atm.

So yeah, I probably shove. The more I can see AQ in Vs range, the more I like a shove. You’re only crushed by 6 specific combos of hands that are less likely thanks to your blockers. And if you include AJs in Vs 3betting range, there are 6 combos of As and Ks, 6 each of Js, Qs, and 10s, and 21 combos of AQ/AK as well as 3 of AJs. That makes 24 combos of hands you have crushed, 18 that flip, and 6 that have you crushed. Add in the fact he might even fold 10s or Js if you shove, I think this is a shove.

You say that the villain is the only one who understand the game. Any 3bet or fold  4bet stats; I think you have +EV but you might consider and the fold equity he has too. He plays for his tournament life (fear equity) but if you call or shove and loose you have around 19K (not use this as an excuse to call). I think he attacks you if he see a high 3bet fold stat. IMO if he 3bet over 9-10% its a shove (i think in this position he has something like this range for 3bet) .If he is too tight i fold. call no way OP at this spot. Without any clue i think its a shove because of the risk you have to take to finish as high as you can.

100% agree. Calling is out of the question, as I see many players do this. I would prefer not to play AKo OOP with an SPR of less than 2. I’ll be getting it in on a lot of flops anyway, so might as well shove pre.

And yeah, if you’re closer to the $ or a big pay jump, then maybe you take some ICM considerations in. But with only 30$ of the remaining field to be paid, I shove and try to gain chips by either a fold or winning a race.

What is the BI? And do you have any note on this V?

3betting over 13bbs I would assume V is not good. You have AK, and that is a good hand, but usually fliping or 60/40, if you have edge on the field I probably fold to keep my stack. A smaller 3bet I certanly calling to play oop and reevaluate on the flop.

it was a $100 live tournament at a local casino. I have only mental notes on the V. He is usually the aggressor but doesn’t over play his hands and is good at picking bluff spots later in hands. Was earlier in other tournaments and deeper than 30bb the other times i played with him. Im not sure if he remembers me at all since i can usually only make it once every few months to play.

Yes, usually a 3 bet of 13bbs is bad and usually is 1010 or jj in my experience. But the players usually are so bad that original raiser usually flats in my position. So i could see him doing it with the intent getting stacks in on the flop easier, assuming he thinks I’m a bad player. Or as i said before he could remember me and might be in a leveling war.

I ended up folding. Of the 27ish players left, maybe 5 of the remaining players could tell you the odds of flopping a set with a pocket pair. So i figured my above average ability was worth passing on the gamble.

Talked to the V 2 breaks later and asked him if he had QQ. For what its worth, he said yeah.
