WSOP C Event

Blinds: 100.200
Stacks: Hero has 23k. V1 has 23k. V2 has 35k

V1: Solid TAG player.
V2: LAG player. Playing a lot of hands. Got it in a few times already with no showdowns.

Hero: Solid TAG Image

Pre-Flop: V1 from UTG+2 raises to 425. V2 on BTN calls. Hero raises AKo from BB to 1600. Call. Call.

Pot= 5k
Flop: 962hhc. Hero Checks. V1 Checks. V2 Checks.

Turn: Kh
Hero checks. V1 bets 2k. V2 calls. Hero calls.

Pot= 11k
River: 4d
Hero Checks. V2 bets 5k… hero?

I feel like I got lost in this hand. I intended on trying to take it down pre-flop. That went bad. I planned on shutting down on flop if I did not hit as I figured V1 would have at least a pair 88+. When I did hit on turn I was leary of building a pot because of hearts so I tried to get to as cheap of a showdown as possible. I thought my hand had showdown value and the way I played it the others might think a lesser pair is good. Poor thought process? How would you suggest I played it if you disagree?

Against a LAG it is tough to tell when they have it, and when they are bluffing. That’s why that style in the hands of a pro can be so effective. What range did you give V2 on the turn and the river? What range do you think he put you on?

You're right that your hand is quite under-represented, and you certainly shouldn't fold it getting 3:1 when people could easily value bet worse. The real problem, I would say, is the earlier checks. Also I'd size a bit larger pre-flop because the original raise was quite small.

Flop is a bit close, but I think betting is better than checking. Would you ever bet here without a pair?

Turn is a very clear bet. Just because better hands are possible doesn't mean you should check. There's quite a bit of value in being called by worse Ks, worse pairs, and heart draws, and even in folding out weak single-heart hands like 8h 8c that actually have a better than 20% chance of outdrawing you on the river if you let them see it for free.

Failing all of that, you should value bet the river yourself rather than check and call. The only merit of checking and calling would be to induce a bluff. Otherwise, although you're right that people may value bet worse, they will surely call with more worse hands than they'll bet.

I encourage you to watch or rewatch my Getting Paid series.

Andrew…if I bet the turn for value, say half pot, and get called. Pot is now 9k. River bricks…what would I do then? Check call? Or bet/ fold? My thought was that if I did bet and am behind I am getting value raped and if I bet and am ahead am I getting called enough to justify it becasue if I am behind now the pot is big and a big river bet could be coming where the LAG guy could bet like 6-9k and put me in a tough spot…and if I bet out and he raises now Im in a really tough spot.

What part of the logic am I missing?

I will watch your series most definitely sir.

Thanks much

I'd bet again on a blank river, and fold to a raise. You're not going to be able to avoid tough spots in poker. You just have to learn how to deal with them. Keeping your ranges balanced is the best way to cope with unknown opponents who will bluff with an unknown frequency. This is part of why I don't like checking the flop. You seem to realize that it turns your hand more or less face-up, and this is the reason why you feel like you can't put money in good even when you turn a really strong hand. You'll probably face the same problem if you have QQ in this spot, bet the flop, and get called. Since you aren't betting AK, are you ever betting without a pair? If not, then QQ is actually one of the weakest hands you could have, even though it's pretty strong. All of your discomfort here is stemming from being unbalanced without any clear plan of what you're trying to exploit.

Totally agree with andrew. Turn is a clear bet , marginal hands will  be checking behind on the turn so you'll be losing value there. Now that you've c/c turn i'd value bet river. I think it's very unlikely the turn has improved your oppoenents range , unlikely they have a flush since they would of bet these otf. River is a b/f for sure.
