Playing in a $75 live daily tourney. Still a long way from the money. Total 27 runners and now around 17. I have been relatively card dead and playing pretty tight. I did show a small bluff few hands earlier against a short stack, but then busted him soon after with AA.

I am in UTG with just under 20 BB. Blinds are 500/1000 & I have AKo. I raise to 3000. Folds to the BB who goes all in for about 13 BB. I did push here off a decent size pot a few hands earlier. I have seen her play other hands in the tourney. Some solid and some way off base. 3 handed she had jacks full vs my trip jacks. I bet about half pot and she called because she didn’t want to scare off button with a raise. He folded and she missed a lot of value trying to induce a call or 3 bet from button.

I call and she has pocket 5’s.

I am pretty sure the call was correct. Thoughts? Should I have just shoved pre-flop rather than raise 3x? I encounter this situation pretty regularly on-line (AK first in with 10-20 BB and never really feel like I choose the best coarse of action). I didn’t hit and she caught an 8 high straight.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Easy call.

With a stack <20bb be more inclined to make your raise sizes less than 3x to give illusion of FE and for those times we get flatters and have to cbet (making our cbet sizing smaller in relation to stack size). If you are at a really fishy table where you are gonna get lots of flatters and/or are going to call off a shove with A8o etc then shoving AK here is the best imo.

never ak for under 20bb, maybe even 30bb unless its just crazy action but in that spot always calling. only two hands have you beat and they can def have aq, aj, a10, kq. happily call
