 Hey folks,

New/old member here, just rejoined after long time away. This might seem like a trivial spot but just wanted to have some other eyes on it.

Bovada 33$, 30k guaranteed (Wild Wednesday mini main event). Over 1500 runners, we are approaching the money (perhaps 260 players remaining, 200ish paid). We have 38bb which is well above average and biggest stack at our table, which we were moved to very recently.

9 handed, we are dealt AKo UTG+1, open for 2.4bb. Folds to SB, who 3bet shoves 31bblind stack (second biggest at our table, very comfortable stack).

Early in a Bovada event, this is a snap-call, because it is so often spewy fish who don’t know how to play AQ or 99 or something. And most importantly, with weak players it is almost never AA or KK. So I called without even thinking. But this late in a tournament, I need to give the remaining unknown players more credit, especially since this is a special event that probably attracts more strong players than normal (not saying much for bovada). The 30blind reshove really confused me, I’m not sure how to range such an unusually large shove. I’m disappointed in myself not so much for my decision but more because I just clicked the button without taking the time to properly consider this unfamiliar situation.

Also, second question, if they make a normal 3bet (to 8bb or something), what is our play?

Definitely never, ever folding AK to a reshove like that. Usually a big overshove like that will be the kind of hand your opponent doesn’t want to have to play postflop but also doesn’t want to fold – hands like 88-JJ and AQ/AK.

If villain makes a standard 3-bet I don’t think we can do anything except 4-bet shove. Only thing I would point out is that 3-betting a 2.4x open to 8x would actually be quite a big sizing – a more traditional SB sizing there would be something like 7bb. Either way, we can’t do anything with AK except get it in there. A combination of our real equity versus their 3-bet/calling range plus a little fold equity makes it a great spot for us.

Thanks for the quick response. I guess I’m just being results oriented, he showed up with KK which I was very surprised to see.

Yeah, that’s just a bad play on his part with KK. It’s not unreasonable to at least partially discount AA/KK from his range in that spot, especially because you have blockers to both.

Agree about the blockers.

I think the shove is also because V is out of position and so I would have put him on a range of 99+/KQ+.

In villain’s spot this would be really bad with KQ, especially KQo. It might not be as bad with 99 because at least that’s not really a strong enough hand to be losing value by not 3-betting smaller, but still – I don’t think it’s good for SB to have any kind of shoving range for 31bb here vs an EP raiser.
