Hey guys,

I'm thinking about adding the donk bet to my game, since I got pretty owned by good players donking into me over the weekend in some of the majors on Merge.  It seems like it can be a pretty powerful play, but like overbetting it can also lead to disaster if you don't know what you're doing.

So TPE nation, do any of you guys have the donk bet in your games?  If so, what kind of variables are you considering?  If not, how would you go about constructing a donk range?

My initial thought is that SPR is hugely important, and that the flop texture needs to make your range stronger than villain's.

I basically only do it v passive fish where im much more comfortable leading 3 streets oop because they wont bet a high enough % to make c/r a better line. i think its largely villain dependent

I do it to build pots sometimes.

For me this is very player dependent. vs weaker opponents you can use the donk bet like duggs and Tilted said to build pots against stations. I also do it on occasion when I flop a big hand vs aggresive/good players that see this for what it usually is and will play back vs a donk bet. Bet sizing and board texture play a big part in this.

also there are some spots where it becomes more useful to donk lead, HU for example where our opponents cbet % comes way down compared to at full tables.

When the pot is multiway (3-5) people and we have a huge amount of equity compared to our opponents (flopped sets, oesfd type stuff) and so want to build the pot without putting in a nutty c/r and the initial aggressor is less likely to cbet given its multiway.

limped pots where we want to bet for value and are oop

Flatting out of the blinds in multiway pots and then flopping huge is prolly the time when I donk the most. As duggs said check raising in those spots looks nutty and villain will cbet way less. Donk leading into 4 people also looks really nutty but it’s the only option you have if stacks are deep

It's villain dependant. Some villains just tool out against donk bets; note them and donkbet relentlessly with the goods and obv don't donkbet against them with weak holdings.

In some cases the donk bet is the perfect play in three way pot with a fish. Lets put in one scenario. A decent villain raises on the button and a loose/passive fish calls in the sb. Here is a perfect spot to call really wide and lead out on a gutterball, bdfd or bottom pair (ergo, any hand strong enough to bet but not strong enough calling a bet). The button is in a shitty situation and probably won't call real light because of the player behind him and we play heads up against the fish.

Many more situations where this is good but there has to be a reason we donkbet and this reason is going to be a combination of what we have and who we are playing (obviously).

interested in this thread as Marc Alioto and I toyed with this a bunch in Vegas this summer.  And I'll only speak for myself when i say that I am less sure about the effective use of a donk bet now that I was before I experimented with it!  lol

i think the best possible donk bet spot and the one ive found most +EV is 3 handed when say MP raises button flats and u defend a blind.  this is the best position to donk from because the PFR is trapped in the middle and having to act 2nd will be forced to play his hand really face up

with that said if any of you donk into me 3 handed im ripping it in no ? asked

Thanks for the responses guys.  Totally agree on a lot of the multiway spots, where we can use relative position to put a ton of pressure on original raiser.

As far as heads up goes, I was thinking there are probably certain SPRs where it would be really strong to donk flush draw boards with FDs and TPTK+ against strong opponents (where c/r'ing might not be feasible).  Haven't done the math on it, but I'm thinking around an SPR of 4 it would be pretty effective.

Just a thought.

Stack-to-Pot Ratio.

So if effective stacks are 3000 and the pot is 300, the SPR is 10.

It's really useful for planning postflop lines on flop/turn.
