Played in my 2nd ever live tourney today at my local casino (nothing major….60 dollar buy- in crap structure type of deal). Have to admit I struggled on adjusting my play. Online I try to be so aware of stack sizes and optimal plays because of them. But live I found that the stack size ranges were so different. Reshoves with 15-20 bb was not even an option, but online that's the optimal play with that effective stack. With shallow stacks and antes, people were still 2.5-3.5x ing the openings (is that normal live?).

I'm sure the topics been covered to death here and all over the net, but I couldn't really find anything recent. If anyone has some good links to forum posts or articles, please let me know.

P.s. still final tabled despite struggling ( sick brag…lol)

Re-shoving ranges and calling ranges in live tournaments are definitely MUCH smaller compared to online. For example when villain ships in 10 BB's from CO im almost always reshipping my A8 from the button online. A majority of the time live this isn't the case. Tighten up both of your ranges considerably. Also live players in general are beyond horrible. 4-5x is pretty standard but don't be surprised if you see it up to 8x. Also maximize value against calling stations/monkeys by betting 75-100% pot. They almost never fold when they hit a piece and you are losing sooo much value by betting your standard 40-50% pot like you do online. Play more pots in position against fish and abuse them because their post flop play will be horrible.

I had a horrible Saturday in 3 live tournaments against some BRUTAL players. They don't fold, they play any A and love suited Ax, in fact they love suited Kx alot too. Saw what looked to be a pretty good player trying to run a bluff with a board that read AAJJx and 3 hearts. It was clear to anyone that there was a minimum of a flush draw, and likely a boat or even quads. the “good player” tried to bluff with 99 and the other player snap called with KK. The bluffer was tilting to the point of shoving with J7 just to get out of the hand. I now question how good he was because he couldn't adjust any more than I could.

I was thrown off my game by villains constantly calling my c-bets, limping with marginal hands, raisng out of position with A3s. 3bets getting called by flush draws. I don't pretend to be a great player and I was so thinking of how I could cut up the room but by the same token I was completely card dead. I should have taken the time to think about the hands more and adjusting accordingly but I was too caught up in the tilt of the moment. How do you balance waiting for cards vs being selectively and appropriately aggressive. I ended up becoming super tight and getting to the point of having to shove with A8.

i struggle with adjusting to live play too. I feel i should have more of an edge as the players are generally worse but im not sure i adjust properly. i feel a $330 down the casino is similar in standard to a $10 online and im profitable at my stakes online. i find my self sinking into their game, calling limps with AQ and pairs up to 10 10. Raising doesnt thin the field and unless u smash a flop theyre not folding and u are facing 5 other players.

I find it easier to play when im around the 20bb mark as i revert back to my standard shove/reshove game and this works well as most of them consider calling a 10BB shove with AQo to be reckless and loose! Widen your shove ranges and tighten your calling ranges. When im playing a decent stack 35bb and above i struggle to find an optimal strategy apart from playing pots in position as much as possible.
