Yo, yo, yo,
1st post alert….
I’ve been thinking a lot about add on strategy lately.
Specifically how to determine when it is actually +EV.
Typically every tourney I play that has an add on available I pretty much always do it. Doesn’t matter if I’m well above avg stack, below or right around avg. I just see an opportunity to add BBs and take advantage.
I know there’s gotta be some math behind this though and sometimes it’s probably not worth it. I searched the forum and for videos here but no luck.
I’m sure once you hit a certain # of BBs you have every play available and therefore you don’t need to use the add on.
So what’s your strategy? Do you base it on the structure and if levels are being skipped so the blinds don’t catch you quickly? Do go off your presumed skill edge or lack there of? Is it strictly dependent on how many blinds you have and what the avg stack is at the moment?
Thanks,

You know, its a damn good question. I also don’t really know how to best use my stacks. As you say, there’s no point in saving them up, because 1500 chips or whatever become fairly irrelevant by mid stages.
I usually just add 2 of my 3 stacks straight off, and use the third as a 2nd bullet in case I bust. I guess the extra stacks can just be used as though they are rebuys if you bust or get too short early stages. Of course you can take more risks with rebuys…

You know another factor that should probably be considered is ICM and the value you are getting for the add on right?
If it’s a $250 buy in for 25k starting stack and the add on is only $100 but you get another 25k in chips at the break then that also seems like you should be more likely to add on. But maybe not so likely if you only get 10k more in chips.
Curious as to what our wizards on here think?

TwoWonOh, you hit the nail on the head. If you pay $250 for a 25K stack, then an average chip in that stack is worth $250/25K = $0.01. If you were to buy another 25K for $250, however, they would all be below average chips, because chip values are not linear. The last chip in your stack is worth the most, and each one you add is worth a little less. That’s why you don’t double your equity when you double your stack. So, the 25K-for-$250 add on is definitely a less good deal than your initial buy. It still could be +EV if you have a large edge on the field, because more chips = more opportunities to invest with an edge.
If you have the chance to get another 25K for $100, then that’s a very good deal and you very much want to do it, so much so that if one’s a one rebuy, one add-on tournament, there’s even a bit of a bubble that occurs where have to play a bit tighter and value your survival during the rebuy period so that you can reach the point in the tournament where you get to take that +EV add-on.
