Hello!!

So, when I was playing I quite didn´t know what to do with this situation, V was limping about 40% of the time, usually betting flop, not sure if V bets when hit or not, saw just one or two like this I think. What do you do with hands like this TPE?

Full Tilt, $3 Buy-in (250/500 blinds, 50 ante) No Limit Hold’em Tournament, 9 Players
Poker Tools Powered By Holdem Manager – The Ultimate Poker Software Suite.

SB: 5,540 (11.1 bb)
Hero (BB): 9,488 (19 bb)
UTG+1: 10,629 (21.3 bb)
UTG+2: 42,179 (84.4 bb)
MP1: 9,900 (19.8 bb)
MP2: 4,082 (8.2 bb)
MP3: 20,979 (42 bb)
CO: 16,871 (33.7 bb)
BTN: 3,250 (6.5 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BB with Aspade 8heart
UTG+1 folds, UTG+2 calls 500, 6 folds, Hero ??

I’d raise to 8BB and push any flop if he happens to call.

It’s a little bit higher variance but I’ve seen this a lot of times where the villain calls and then folds when he doesn’t hit (which is the vast majority of time).

If he folds you get 3 blinds, if he calls you’ll get 11BB most of the time, double up a good percentage of the time and lost a really small percentage.

And yes, this is exploitable so I’m not suggesting doing this as a rule, more like specifically in this situation where you are BB (no one else to act) you have an above average hand and your villain is quite limp friendly.

There’s no one left to act besides the limper, so it comes down to (assuming your read is right) whether A8 is better than 40% of hands.

If you take a free flop, what types of non-ace-high flops will you feel comfortable betting? If it’s KQ8, what would you do, for example? On one hand, shoving pre is “easier,” but there’s something to be said for not being in tough situations as well.

Based on the information you provide, it sounds like you’re thinking about checking and then check-shoving the flop because he usually bets. You don’t need A8 for that (although having the ace blocker must mean something).

If I’m confident that he limps with 40% of his range pre, I shove my option. There are a lot of short stacks that should be shoving pretty wide, which makes it harder for me to get it in pre uncontested. Based on the blind level, I’m assuming we’re midway through a tournament, so there aren’t ICM considerations.

FWIW, I don’t think you should ever plan to do anything without regard to the flop. Like, raising and then shoving any flop or checking and then check-shoving any flop… I can’t imagine either of those will be better than actually playing poker.

Andrew, if I raise to 8BB I’m committing myself to the flop and leaving myself a slightly over half pot bet.

I’m effect I’m shoving but given the particular type of player, doing it in two steps as he’s capable of limp, calling to fold most flops… I’m not refusing to “play poker”, I’m just comitting myself pre. After raising to 8BB I’m never folding anyway.

I can’t think of any flop that would make me change my mind… Maybe if we smash it with A88 or something like that but… otherwise.

Even so there may be some boards where check-calling is better than shoving.

I don’t like the table dynamic here. I probably check my option and give up most of the time rather than get involved with a trashy ace out of position. I’ve spewed too many chips in spots like this.

EP is very deep and just limps with 3 extremely short stacks. V is either…

1. totally unaware of stacks.

2. sacrificing 1BB to delay making a decision, e.g. decide to call a small raise, fold to a shove, or call if heads-up. Maybe has hands like 55-TT, AJ-AQ, KQ, suited connectors, etc.

3.  V actually wants someone to shove with AQ+, JJ+
