I can't remember the villain's exact stats but from what I'd seen they were pretty active and running at something like 57/45  – but only over a sample size of 15 hands.

How do you guys play this – do you fold pre-flop, raise preflop – just flat?

What do you put the villain on and I'd be interested in how people play the turn and river – keep barelling or slow down?

Do you pay attention to the stats/read or is it just to small a sample size?

Any comments would be appreciated.

You made the right move in calling the extra 500 preflop. You are getting great odds, and the hand flops pretty well. I would be cautious though if the player that limped utg+1 is any good. If he is good, then i would think he is limping in a premium every time, but if he isnt, then he could have a wide range and just isnt aware of his stack size. If utg+1 was good then i would check/fold to his bet on the flop, but assuming he is more of a fish (more probable) then I would lead flop. We can get value from smaller pairs, flush draws, and it lets us find out where we stand.  Once the bb raises, I think we have to give him credit for a decent hand. He didn't invest any money preflop, and he has a short stack behind him that has yet to act. He's committing himself to the short stacks shove. I would just tend to fold to the raise. We are behind a lot of his raising range. We don't beat many 9's, and he could have any sort of two pair since he was in the bb. He could definitely be raising a flush draw, but i don't think its a good idea to be calling barrels in this spot being oop and not knowing whether we are up agaisnt a made hand or a draw. It's just not a great spot, and we still have 40+bb to work with if we fold, which is a boatload.

If you are to continue then I definitely think calling is best. Once you 3 bet the flop are you calling a shove? That just seems way to spewy. I'm curious as to what you range him on here? Are you betting the turn and river for value, bluff, or blockbetting? I just cant see what hands he calls you down with that you beat. If you put him on a draw, then I would check river and let him bluff missed diamonds.

All in all i would just let him have it on the flop. He makes a largish raise, and the turn and river are going to be super marginal spots, which we don't need to put ourselves in being this deep.

Hi mate,

my thoughts for the hand are like this:

  • Pre-flop, i agree to call and see the flop with 8-9 suited connectors.(The tricky part with calling here is that you dont know where you stand compared to the others, especially the BB, so i try to play the hand extremely conservative unless i hit something like 2pairs or better)
  • Flop, here I will also make my continuation bet as you did, but then the vilain (which we dont have a lot of inshight) is re-raising, so what I would evaluate here is a) what hands am i beating? b) do i have enough chips to leave this hand and move to the next one ? I would fold.
  • Turn,  6h not brining many changes, considering that I am having a top pair with a bad kicker, would not raise here, also if vilain is chasing straight/flush draw will most times (imo) check for a free card if given the opportunity.I wait to see and if a flsuh or straigh comes in river i would fold in his raise.
  • River, i think here things are not getting better with the ace, and if i calculated correct you can still perserve some chips, so I am no betting here and hope the vilain will check, if not I fold.
I have conluced that to play best marginal hands like these I need to a have a plan in advance like: call the flopl- cbet if i flop a top pair or a draw, but if reraised  I am most of the times behind so fold and keep some chips for later stages.
That's just the way i am thinking about this hand, interested to hear some more comments 🙂

flatting pre is fine i guess

but i would play the flop much more passive -check/call- cause I think the way you have played it you help buildng a big pot with a marginal hand and we are oop – not optimal imo
