$120 Buy In Live Tournament.
40 entries – down to 20 or so. $1400 1st place is aout $1400.

Eff. Stack was mine at 20K or so.

Villain Info: He is recklessly aggro a lot of the time. Plays about 75% of his hands. Limps a lot and calls raises hoping to hit. Has built a big stack by hitting sloppy 2 pair and occasional disguised big hand. I have seen him semi-bluff as well as bet big to push people off hands with middle pair and TP with bad kicker. His sizings when he has a monster are usually big and obvious – like pot size bets or 2/3rd pot bets and the like. He is not a super thoughtful villain, but not bottom of the barrel either.

My Image – TAG-ish if V even cares.

Blinds: 500-1000

V limps UTG. I raise 2000 (this has been my standard raise) OTB with 88

SB and BB call and V calls.
POT= 8000

Flop: J72
Check. Check. Check. I bet 4000. Folds to V who calls.

Pot= 16k

Turn is 4. V Bets 4000…I call.

Pot = 24k
River is 9. V bets 4000 again…

Somewhere in this hand -I think it was his bet on turn – I got lost I think.
My basic thought process in the calls was that I thought he was capable of doing this with a 7 here as well as maybe a semi-bluff of some sort with diamonds/ straight etc. He could also have the J of course and maybe hit 2 pair.

I'd appreciate any thoughts you have on this hand and on each street. Thanks.

Hi there,

I like playing pairs but here… I see too many players in the pot, maybe you didn't raise enough to kick them out of the pot, why would SB and BB call ?

Also, there's your dear V, who would basically play any two suited cards but could have anything else, like an overpair.

You played as if you had jacks, but why would he care, as you said he's reckless.

He didn't fold to your cbet, right, then he definitely may have something. You only have 88! Don't go broke with just one pair, also don't try to bluff too much, it's costly.

What would I do ? Raise more preflop, cbet flop, check raise turn and see where it goes IF you want to bluff.

The better option, to me, would've been cbet flop check turn fold. Hyper LAGs can play ANY TWO CARDS, they're annoying as hell heh

Good luck ! 🙂

I agree with raising larger pre-flop, but I don't see what raising turn would accomplish. As played, you're getting 7:1, so the question isn't really “would he play a J this way” because of course he would, but rather “is there any chance he could have worse”? You have to win like 15% of time to justify calling…

@Leponex – We don't have enough chips to x/r turn and “see where it goes”. A x/r on turn will be a shove for us, as we only have 14k left on the turn.

@wager9 – I would have raised to 3400 pre flop. It's big, but a good rule to use is to add 0.5-1BB for every limper in the pot to your raise size. This is even bigger, purely because the limper in this hand is a fish. Also, it allows us to set up for a lot of turn shoves when we like the board, which is what I'd have been going for with this board.

I notice you mention that min raising is your “standard raise”. While I tend to agree that having a pre set raise size can be quite beneficial in disguising your hand strength, one of my coaches told me that it's fine to be “unbalanced” – Especially in spots that aren't “standard”. He went on to a long explanation I won't get into here, but it is suffice to say that it's perfectly fine to raise larger when there are limpers in the pot, and very few people will be able to exploit you because of that.

Varying your raise size based on publicly available information such as the number of limpers in the pot, your position, effective stack sizes, size of antes, etc. doesn’t reveal any information about your hand and is something you should do. Only varying raise size based on your cards risks revealing information to opponents.
