Blinds: 250/500

UTG+1: 20bb – raise 1500

MP 1 (Hero): 40bb – call (AclubQheart)

BB: 10bb – all in

UTG +1: all in

Hero?

The 3x raise from UTG looks suspicious to me and I doubt I am crushed but risking half my stack gave me pause.

Do you think utg opens 3x because he wants to secure an isolated all in from bb? as in, do you think he's trying to discourage action by 3xing when he plans on getting it in vs the 10bb? he sees it as he's not risking anything different between 1000 and 1500 as he plans to put in 5000 anyway. but by making it 1500 and not 1000, he lets the rest of the table know. well what kind of hands would he do that with? they're not garbage hands really, but he probably doesn't have premiums if that's the case. he wouldn't want to advertise that. that would mean he needs to be i guess a level 3 thinker? he's thinking about what youre thinking about what he has, and we're going one level past that to react to it. hands that are good against 1 opponent's short stack with the potential for overlay (since he shoved,…idk i think that plan makes sense…raise and hope to be isolated but further isolate once you've been called) – midpairs, hands like A9-AQ, KQ, 88-TT. I'm not 100% and I'm just thinking out loud. It's a little weird to decipher since he's utg, but people open light utg. Youre on bovada though, so it's hard to think he'd be too competent.

Okay I wrote all this out and realized youre probably talking about that other tournament lol. I didn't realize you were only 3-handed but didn't want to delete what I wrote out because I think about it a lot when someone opens mp-lp into short stacked bb and i'm in the sb. It's really fun to shove K4s and show it down because youre way ahead of a 1bb all in (random hand) and you have a raise, the antes, and a sb that you win for free. You called to keep the 20bb stack's range wide even though I prob 3b or 3b all in. didn't you get what you wanted? or were you hoping to play postflop? or for the bb to shove and utg fold? it kind of looks now like you called thinking youre ahead but didn't have a plan. i think if you do call the open, it's to induce action because you think he'll get it in wider than he'll call with.

Sorry, should have clarified that this was a different tourney and we are nine handed – so thanks for not deleting your original post!

Yeah, everytime I see 3x and 4x opens on Bovada in early position (at least in turbos) I immediately think mid pairs, KQ, Ax suited as you mentioned. I think he is trying to avoid a flat call but will get it in with a smaller stack that reshoves. The more I think about it I probably should have just shoved instead of flat calling because he can put me in an akward spot with the reshove. I still have 20bb if I do lose the flip but I also think I can get him to fold some of his range he would have called a shorter stack with.
