JDog's post has had me thinking a lot about 4betting and how to approach it in general. The question I am coming back to is this, once you get to a 3bet and if you are in a situation where you think it is being done light, is a 4bet that is less than a shove ever really appropriate. The reason I ask this is as follows, is there any value in not doing this since you are rarely (<10%?) getting someone to fold (and are you really using this line to get them to fold) so why ever go for less than max value here. On the flip side I know for me, that if I get to the point of being willing to 4bet chances are I am not going to find the fold button. I am really curious about how others handle/manage 4bet situations.
I guess the question I have is from my analysis and understanding I don't think I ever get into 4betting light. I was curious about what situations and dynamics do people look for to potentially do this light as I am sure a lot of people think like me that you aren't going to escalate to this level without being serious about taking it to the felt.
The only advice I can give you is trying. Without experimenting you will go nowhere. Just 4-bet shove were you otherwise would fold. If you think someone is looking you up with 3-bets, just shove all in and see what happens. (Suited) Ace-rag hands are good to do it with, because you will nearly always have 30%. Combined with the fold equity, it will be a powerful move.
You really need to have deep stacks to 4bet light because it usually involves a bit of chips. I never find that Im in that spot except my recent hand when I thought my QQ was way ahead and I had too many chips to just simply shove. I find that I often look for 3bet shove spots, 4betting just doesnt happen all too often with out it simply being a shove. I see a guy raise and then a reraise and I have a monster and I cold 4bet get it in, that does happen regularily. But its never light in the micros you will get looked up so often.
first thing to consider is if your light 4 bet has fold equity. If you get 3 bet and a guy only has 21bbs you probably aren't getting folds.
The 2nd thing to consider is reads. Have you seen him 3 bet fold before? Does he 3 bet a high %?
If you have FE, and he's relatively aggressive a light 4 bet can be very profitable. Just have to be careful in not getting to carried away with and put yourself in spots where you are making up reads and making up FE that just isn't there.
