Hey guys,

This is a hand I am thinking may have been a little spewy. Have a look and tell me what you think:

Poker Stars $3.00+$0.30 No Limit Hold'em Tournament – t1000/t2000 Blinds + t200 – 9 players
TournamentPokerEdge.com Hand History Converter

siglos78 (SB): BB = 6.3, t12657
trc69 (BB): BB = 9.9, t19799
yasar87 (UTG): BB = 20.7, t41320
El_Prospe (UTG+1): BB = 1.8, t3670
OMFGItsMatt! (UTG+2): BB = 11.8, t23648
LENNY374 (MP1): BB = 9.8, t19594
justin555 (MP2): BB = 10.8, t21696
Hero (CO): BB = 21.2, t42486
mjc00005 (BTN): BB = 7.7, t15394

Pre Flop: (t4800) Hero is CO with Q of diamonds J of hearts
5 folds, Hero raises to t42286 all in, 2 folds, trc69 calls t17599 all in

Flop: (t41998) 7 of diamonds T of hearts T of spades (2 players – 2 are all in)

Turn: (t41998) 3 of clubs (2 players – 2 are all in)

River: (t41998) 4 of hearts (2 players – 2 are all in)

Final Pot: t41998
trc69 shows A of hearts A of spades (two pair, Aces and Tens)
Hero shows Q of diamonds J of hearts (a pair of Tens)
trc69 wins t41998

The reason for the shove is because I am effectively up against 10 bb's. Would you consider this a standard play given the rapidly increasing blinds/antes? I have only been at this table for two orbits and have only seen a couple showdowns with no unordinary info. Appreciate any input.

I would make this play close to the bubble or FT Bubble.  At these stakes you get called so little that it def is a +EV shove IMO.  if not on the bubble and no reads it is more borderline.  I might raise and fold to a 3 bet.  I dont plaly a lot of 180s but it seems to me that most shoves over your raise are going to still be premium hands and your still will get claled by tiny stacks or get folds of medium strength starting hands.

In the CO I'm not shoving, just because the stakes are so low so you will get enough Ax calls there.

On the button I would shove it though.

I think it might depend on the reads on the short stacks behind you though more than anything.

That shove is fine with the thought that the blinds have short stacks. He just woke up with AA, no biggy.

One thing I do at these stages is really pay attention to the 3-4 people on my left and how likely they are to fold to SB and BB steals and % they fold to 3bets as well. If they are folding to blind steals a lot and are also timid to 3bets, I punish every chance I get. I custom my HUD so these are easy for me to see.

One quick thing I wanted to add to my post was since I watch these stats so closely, a standard shove becomes more player based.

Thanks for the input, fellas.

If we're at a fairly readless table, is a min raise/fold the optimal play in this spot given stack sizes?

NO! given the stack sizes is what makes your jam exactly the right play. They are short and you are putting them to a decision for all their chips. They are folding a majority of the time and you are racking the pot. When they do call, you have a hand that flops and plays well. Dont pay attention to the results. Put the pressure on the shorties when you have a playable hand.

I personally feel that the play was fine.  With their stack size (the blinds) even if you open and they 3 bet jam are you folding…no?  You just ran in to a big hand and it is easy to be results oriented.  The one thing that I am trying to do when playing is being aggro is these spots my jamming the 20bb with antes in the position you are in.  Sure you can min raise, fold, but I just think that is poor planning prior to your action.

When I am prepared to open a marginal hand, or lets just say not the nuts, I am already prepping myself on who I will call their 3bet jam which are in fact the short stacks.  You are also going to be deeper than 20bb eff.  So I wouldn't worry about it..also as the previous posts, you need to know who you are jamming in to.  Are they tight, loose, etc.  All these are key.  I just think you ran in to a monster.  If they mucked or you ran in to 8s and won a flip are you still posting this?  Probably not.  I am the same way after I make a play and run in to a monster, or get unlucky.  I question did I do the right thing.  This is why these forums are so great for instant feedback.  Don't beat yourself up.  Best of luck at the tables.

Readless, I'm shoving everytime based on the above reasoning….

To go one further i would probably call a shove with your hand if i was on the big.  Just got unlucky my friend.
