My thoughts on the hand:

V is pretty straight forward player, with stats (for 256 hands) : VPIP: 21 PFR: 17, 3b: 8.9, F to 3b: 38, 4b 20.0, Postflop Agg Factor 1.9

When V 3bets me preflop I putted him on a range of 88+, ATo+, A9s+, KQo, KJs+, maybe sometimes with QJs. A few hands ago, when we where 4-handed, i wanted to 4b him as a bluff. Me being on the button, and he called my raise. On an A high flop he check-shoved. If then I was chipleader, now I’m the second stack and I don’t want to be called for my life in the tourney. Keep in mind that the BB is a pretty much a fish. If I 4b shove him preflop I think that he would have called me only with AQ+, TT+(maybe JJ+) and folded anything else. I think that my hand is a little to strong to fold preflop, so i decide to only call to keep his weak range in play. I have pot odds of 2.75:1 and I can definitely outplay him on the flop.

I got pretty lucky on the flop, flopping trips. V decided to check, which looks a little strange to me. But I really wanted to put my money in ASAP, latest on the turn. I don’t want him to fold his weak range either, so i decided to bet something like 42% of pot. V instant shove on me. I’m happy to see that, but I’m also worried about him having pocket tens there, but that is the only hand that could have me beat. In my opinion he could have played that hand in this manner with KQ, QJ, KK, AA, but also AK, AJ, AT and KJ of spades. As I was pretty active and aggresive when I was chipleader, maybe he thinks I’m bluffing there, so sometimes he has there pocket eights to pocket jacks, but very very rarely. Based on the fact that he snap-shoved, I putted him on lower Qs, kings and aces and monster draws. So I called and V showed AK of spades.

I really didn’t wanted to be eliminated on 3rd place and let the fish to go on second place. If I have missed the flop by any means, I could still live in the tourney and wait for other spots. When I reached the final table I was taking a look for the players on sharkscope. V was opted out, so he knows how to use sharkscope. Based on that, I could assume that somehow he’s know what he’s doing, right? The other player, the fish, well… he has fish stats smile . A few hands later I eliminated villain and I went HU with the fish, where I destroyed him with raises pre almost every hand. He simply didn’t had no clue about HU play.

What are your thoughts on this hand? My thought process was OK? Or should I have simply shoved pre? Please leave me your thoughts.

Hey rustyrust.

Every hand is analysed on this forum, no matter whether it’s a $1 or $1000 buy-in tournament. I did not see any hand without a response. You should be a bit more patient, most pros are usually busy with tournaments and other stuff. I will drop my 2 cents in the meantime.

I picked from your description that it’s a 3-handed final table. I don’t know how good are players on $1 final tables, but the 3betting ranges in 3-handed final tables 40+BBs deep are much wider than what you defined.

I’m fine with your line pre-flop, at some cases I would prefer 4betting (due to Vs 3bet range being so wide) but getting shoved on after 4bet would put you in a tough spot.

There is nothing else you can do on the flop. When I flop a top set with top kicker, I pray for V to put all his chips in. Your opponent did you the best favour you could ask for.

I’m happy to see that, but I’m also worried about him having pocket tens there’

You should open some equity calculator (PT4 has one), put the flop situation and the range you gave to your opponent. See the percentages. Worrying about Villain having one of 3 combos of TT is wrong way of thinking about poker. I would suggest watching Andrew’s Getting off on the right foot series.

Thank you for your feedback, kardi31!

When I said I’m afraid of his tens, well … maybe I have exaggerated. As you said, there are only 3 combinations of TT that could have beat me and too many combinations that I’m dominating. So, basically, my thought process there is that this is the only combination that could have me beat at that point(TT). It was only a missed interpreted phrase. smile

I like kardi31’s analysis. Considering the stack dynamics, and especially with your reads on the other players, I think getting AQo in preflop would be a bit too splashy. Flatting keeps more dominated hands in villain’s range and lets you play the rest of the hand in position.

I like that you’re focused on outlasting the fishy player, but once this flop hits I think your only concern is how to get the most chips into the middle as possible. I mostly like your reasoning and the ranges you gave villain. Well played, congrats on the win!
