Just wondering what you guys thought about this. I'm primarily a live player, but I have played my fair share of online poker. Online I tend to 3b and 4b 2.2-2.3x when I'm IP and 2.5x OOP, but obviously this varies slightly. In general, I like to make my 3b and 4b bigger live. I'd say 2.5x IP and 3x OOP There obv is much more 3b and 4b online compared to live but I wanted some feedback on what your sizing is live vs online, if it varies at all. I feel like there are many more spots online to 3b and 4b where live there isn't nearly as many. Obv this depends on the tournament you are playing how competent the players are. For example when I played the BLUFF MSPT Event last month, the structure is amazing (the best in the Midwest) and the players were all fairly competent and capable of making plays. Therefore there were a lot of spots to 3b and 4b. But when I play in lets say a daily tournament somewhere, where the structure is shit and there are many more fish, it's different. I also tend to keep my 3b and 4b bluffs the same size as when I have the nuts, and I think that is important for balancing our ranges. Feedback is encouraged. Thanks dudes.
My online 3b sizing is same as yours online and I tend to keep it the same live. I dont really see a need to go bigger live. People are easily exploitable live as I found the generic live player is worse that the generic online player. I think you got it spot on with your sizing.
I keep my sizing the same as online until I feel that adjustments need to be made. Usually that's sizing 3bets a little larger. It depends on whether or not I think the players behind me will cold call smaller 3bets with their stupid little pairs, suited connectors, and random broadways. That's the biggest reason to adjust your 3bet sizing…what's the best sizing to avoid playing a bloated multi-way pot? Live players don't like to fold pretty cards.
I'm not exactly a seasoned vet of liveaments, though. The bulk of my live experience is in small stakes cash games, where betsizing is much different from tournaments (incidentally, I can always identify online tourney players at cash tables because their sizing is too small in general).
I find that live tourneys 3betting early on needs to be a bit larger, like 3.5X in order to get enough folds, otherwise like river said I tend to see a lot of calling to see if they hit and sometimes end up laying a 4 way pot (this is much worse in 1/2 cash of course). And since there is hardly any 4betting, I feel comfortable just 2.2Xing a 3 bet. So If blinds are 100/200 with 25 antes for example I would 3bet to 700 but if 4betting a similar 3 bet I would only go to 1500-1600 hundred since I dont see a need for more.
More importantly, I find that 3bets and 4bets can be made related to the villains stakc sizes, a lot of the time their decisions are based on “How much of my stack do I need to put in”, so that determines my sizes as well.
Later in tourneys I tend to reduce my 3 bets to 2.2X and keep the 4 bets at 2.1 or even 2x.
It obvoiusly depends a lot on tourney structure and table dynamics as well.
