Poker Stars $20+$2 No Limit Hold'em Tournament – t800/t1600 Blinds + t150 – 8 players
TournamentPokerEdge.com Hand History Converter

CO: BB = 26.2, t41965
BTN: BB = 28.8, t46121
SB: BB = 59.5, t95176
Hero (BB): BB = 43.7, t69889
UTG: BB = 18.1, t29003
UTG+1: BB = 23.2, t37042
MP1: BB = 42.0, t67229
MP2: BB = 89.9, t143770

Pre Flop: (t3600) Hero is BB with A of diamonds K of hearts
4 folds, CO raises to t3223, BTN calls t3223, SB raises to t10500, Hero ??

Later in the 20Dollar cubed. I know the SB to be a solid reg, capable of making moves and playing aggressively. We have some history together, nothing major, but I think he sees me as a somewhat capable player.

I have been playing increasingly aggressive, 3betting a lot the last couple of orbits

I don't like to fold, as I am pretty far ahead of his squeezing range.

The problem with flatting is obv that I'm so often gonna be faced with a c-bet, and I'm gonna have a horrible time unimproved. I don't think the 2 openers are gonna jam-bluff often, so a call to set them up is not viable.

I think that this is a nice spot in which I can 4-bet fairly light and expect quite a high percentage of folds. The problem now is should I call after making it like 22/23k when SB jams? If he sees me as capable of making a 4-bet bluff this should be a fairly easy call, right?

I 100% 4b call here. Its a great spot for you and as you mentioned he is a solid reg, bluff 3balls are in his range. Your 4b does look strong tho however as the openers are both below 30 bigs and by you making it 22 k your effective saying you will call them off. I think if he is capable he probs gets away tho unless he has been coolered obvs. Had the CO and BTN both been deeper this spot would look a certain steal from you.

I probably just 4 bet jam here and take away some of his possible 5 bet range. You are basically gaining 50% of your stack without showdown by jamming here the times he folds.

I think I make a 4b to 23k and then call a jam. The fact that you have history with the SB makes your 4b look really fishy to him. I prefer this line instead of 4b jamming because you induce the SB to rip it in with his A10 – AQ.

I found myself in a very similar spot to this last night with AK, I 4bet and he flatted me, the flop came JJ2 rainbow. He shoved, I called and he flipped over KJ. If I'd 4 bet jammed I take that pot down uncontested and remove the horrible spot I found myself in and subsequent dubious call.

Admittedly the villain I played my hand against played his hand badly and got lucky, you say yours is a capable player so the above situation seems unlikely but it removes any potential disasters… Until he flips AA of course! wink

Anyway, for me it's a 4bet jam.

I like the thought of trying to induce A10-AQ to reship so you can call, but do you think history will come into play enough for this to happen?  Considering the fact SB is capable/good reg, do you think they will be able to assume that after investing a 4bet of 23k that HERO would ever fold this spot with his stack?

Thinking about that, I'm not sure the Villian would assume he can shove that range.  Granted I don't know the exact history between you two but a 4bet in this spot looks super strong so it's rarely with a hand that A10-AQ dominates and villian has plenty of chips to pick a better spot.

All that said, I like the 4bet Jam because this could potentially look weaker than the the 4bet raise, so maybe that range can call the jam more than the raise? Yes? No?

Great spot for a 3 bet from the SB — if he is a competent reg and he knows that u are capable, i prefer the 4 bet and call a jam. I think he should know that this is a good spot for a cold 4 bet, and he may well 5 bet shove a lot worse than AK.
