It is a tricky spot because you don't know his ranges for doing this, but most guys have a very tight polarised range for doing this AA/KK/QQ. The problem is that you then have other guys who don't have a clue what they are doing and squeeze a depoalrised range which includes JJ+; AJo+ etc. So again you find it tricky because you don't know where he fits. As a default I would lean towards flatting all my continuing range and only adjust it based on any specific interesting hands I see villain play. I also think as TPE member you should have a pretty big edge in a $2 tourney and therefore should be less inclined to monkey off a big stack hoping that villain is the type to get in JJ or TT.
Post flop. I think flop is a mandatory call and I would call the turn too. I think most people will not fire the river as a bluff at these stakes. Often they will slow down on a flush card with value hands since it is a scare card and you could have a flush. On the flip side when the flush draw misses often they will check thinking they are inducing from missed draws and so you can take the free showdown. But if they bet you can safely fold since it is unlikely someone is going to squeeze an EP raiser withthese stacks and then monkey 3barrel him off, especially when your read on villain is that he is good.
Oo, def tricky spot and these spots have owned me 'cause I sometimes fold too quickly without thinking everything through. I'll chime in since no one else has.
I'm thinking 4-bet pre here to try to keep it heads up since the SB is getting just over 5-1 on a call when you just call. Tricky since BB is the only stack that has us covered at the table.
Since it's a $2 peeps can definitely spaz and donate chips at this stage, so that makes me like the 4-bet more. If BB shoves then we call and are probably against AK-AQ, and if he 5-bets and we have some sort of read we can find a fold thinking he has KK or AA. (I don't use a HUD so I don't know what 17/31 means). If he shoves and has AA, KK then cooler and gg.
I'm not sure what the best play is on the turn – interested to hear what others or some of the pros think. But like I said at this stage people can definitely spaz out, so if you've called PF and the flop then calling the turn and seeing what happens on the river, with the plan to call on any non-A,K river. Calling the turn still leaves you with 56BBs if you think you're beat on the river.
His line does seem strong coming from EP so I'd be worried about AA, KK, JJ but think he can def show up with AJ-AK here a good bit of the time too.
I wouldn't be laying this down in a $2 tourney. He could have AJ and think it's good. But, he could have AA, KK or JJ and have you crushed. Depends on your read and how you feel at that moment in teh tourney. Early, I wouldn't fold. Later, I would think about it. Especially because you should be better then most of the field.
So, what happened?
