I’ve been trying to work on my tourney game and looking for spots where I can resteal from players who open too much. The MP player has been opening quite a bit and my read on him is that he likes to raise pots, but I’ve seen him fold to ever shove since he has been @ the table. He’s running 27PFR/3.3 @3bet over 77 hands with a VPIP of 34. Is this a spot where you’re looking to ship since he opens too much when it folds to us? Any advice would be great. Thanks!

For the most part you aren't going to have much fold equity from that stack and your hand is going to be behind almost always when called so I think this is a fold. Having said that I do go on feel here too, at low stakes you still have FE at surprisingly short stacks vs some players. So in general fold, but with a decent read it's a marginal spot to jam. As a rule I would want 18bbs or more to think I had enough FE to be jamming light.

I'd like to have at least 16bb to be restealing light as you don't really have a lot of fold equity on your stack. You don't want the opener calling with A7-AT here. I just fold here though it's not a bad play given your read. If he's competent though he knows he's priced in to call with a decent part of his opening range.

Aside from that, just unlucky the BB woke up with something, but that will happen no matter how many bigs you have. Maybe the play would've worked if he wasn't sitting behind with a monster.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. In this case given my read it was 100% the right play to make against this villain since it folded around to me in the SB + this guy is opening too much and folding to shoves. I guess the real question comes down to is this: what kind of hands are looking for when you consider shippin' your short stack in for a steal? What positions are you considering to steal from? Only CO, BTN, SB and BB?

Cheers,

I agree with them, if you feel that he is making a steal move then the play is correct. If BB folded the MP has to think your range is very slim since you are 3 betting and it will cost him half his stack to call your allin. Needless to say the BB woke up with a hand and it happens. Way to stick with your plan and go with your gut on making this play.

I'm looking for hands that are going to have decent equity when called, and hands that have blockers to him having monsters. Something like A3/K5/79s/45s, value hands obv. as well. Rather than looking at it in terms of what positions to use the play in, the object is that we are restealing against someone who is perceived to have a wide opening range. People's ranges are generally widest on the BTN, CO, or SB blind v blind. If someone is very aggressive and opening a lot from early position (a 32/27 might fall into this category), then it would be a good spot to resteal on his EP opens too. The only thing to be wary of is when you resteal from earlier positions, there is a larger potential that someone behind you can always wake up with a hand since there are more people behind you.
