Hi,
I’m posting this because I feel like my turn call was a mistake. What do you think?
Entering the hand was already pretty loose for me, but there was very little 3-betting and I expected my call would bring the BB along getting me almost 4:1 at a cost of just 1.5BB? I decided to continue more aggressively when I saw the A was on the board as I figured the chances of a higher flush was greatly reduced. I included the flush ranges below but if I tried removing them and I only gain about 4% equity.
I think I was getting the right price based on the Equity simulation below. It just felt really loose to me and I’m trying to leak less chips overall, especially when really deep.
Board: Ad 5d 9h 4h equity win tie pots won pots tied Hand 0: 41.003% 40.87% 00.13% 2176 7.00 { Qd3d } Hand 1: 58.997% 58.87% 00.13% 3134 7.00 { 99, 55-44, A9s, A5s-A4s, KJs-K2s, J8s+, T7s+, 97s+, 86s+, 75s+, 65s, 32s, A9o, A5o-A4o }

Definitely a fold pre-flop. OK, you’re getting 4:1, but you’re also contesting the pot against three other people. That’s not the same as 4:1 in a heads up pot. It’s actually better for you if the BB folds – you’d rather have 3.5:1 in a three-way pot. Plus, you’re out of position, which will make it harder to realize the equity you do have. Great example here: even though you have a good chance of making the best hand by the river, you have to either fold that equity or put a lot of money in bad in order to realize that chance.
The problem with your equity calc, as best I can tell, is that when you put J8s+, that is including Js 8s and Jc 8c, not just flush draws, for your opponent. If you’re going to call a turn shove anyway (and you shouldn’t), then you might as well shove yourself. Much better for you if you can cause him to fold middle pair instead of giving him a chance to shove with it.
But mostly, just fold pre-flop.
