Hi guys

I've been really struggling with these spots recently with between 14-20BBs knowing whether it's too much to be open shoving. I just feel like 17+BBs is too much to be open shoving to win 2.5BBs (in blinds and antes) and I'd prefer preserving this stack to shove over a LP raise. What do you think?

I snap shove both of these hands without thinking about either one. You take it down way more times then not then if you figure out the amount of times you suck out when your called by a better hand both of these are plus ev shoves imo. Put it in get called by kk and suck out imo 🙂 Standard shoves for the bigdog.

Another thing to look at with the first hand is the size of the stacks yet to act, the SB, being so short, may call with a wide range just to get his money in and try to double-up. Even if you lose you still have some chips. The only worry would be the BB having a hand. Either way shove here, your probably good……. GL

I think you will find Live tournies to be even better to shove these hands. Remember, online, if you bust….you just launch another tourney. Playing live, people tend to value their tournament lives moreso and tighten up on calling ranges.

I sat'd into the FT 750k gtd today and I had this thread stuck in my head when my stack was at 15-20bbs. Even though I didnt feel very comfortable doing it, I did it like 3 times with marginal hands and took the pot down each time.

I figure Bigdog and ttwist know alot better than me. It did keep me afloat and prob helped me min-cash.

Look at this hand that just happened, it's pretty funny. $4 180man:

Poker Stars $4.00 No Limit Hold'em Tournament – t50/t100 Blinds – 9 players
Hand Conversion courtesy of Tournament Poker Edge

Iggy Poc (UTG+2): t1766 17.66 BBs
caramelgirl (MP1): t2570 25.70 BBs
mm209 (MP2): t1395 13.95 BBs
EricWill33 (CO): t2242 22.42 BBs
TeSokando (BTN): t2595 25.95 BBs
J2Duncan (SB): t1525 15.25 BBs
huck62 (BB): t3423 34.23 BBs
pk10again (UTG): t2940 29.40 BBs
scottman90 (UTG+1): t925 9.25 BBs

Pre Flop: (t150) mm209 is MP2 with Q of clubs J of hearts
4 folds, mm209 raises to t1395 all in, 1 fold, TeSokando raises to t2595 all in, 2 folds

Flop: (t2940) 3 of diamonds 6 of hearts 8 of clubs (2 players – 2 are all in)

Turn: (t2940) 5 of hearts (2 players – 2 are all in)

River: (t2940) Q of hearts (2 players – 2 are all in)

When people call you a donk, you know you made the right call. The whole purpose to shoving preflop with a decent hand is because you have five chances to improve. The longer you wait, only gives your opponent those chances.  I am learning to be more agressive as well; watching Bigdog has really helped.  When people call me a donk or something after winning it, I just respond, shipping it like the Bigdog. I disagree with this on the basis that 18bbs usually isn't as short stack as it is online.  Even if you blind down to <15bbs in most live tourneys you are able to have lots of FE.  I've been in lots of live tourneys where 8bbs was big FE.

That said, i'd shove em in LP but not from MP in live tourneys.

Totally agree. If I open shove QJo fr MP semi late in a live tournament and get KO'd by an AQ call, I'm not walking away telling myself – at least I did the right thing.

Shove the QJ hands…and dont look back.

You are going to remember the times it doesnt work rather than remember the times it does work…..Am I right?
