about 11 hours in and 40 minutes away from the end of day 1 I pick up AA for the first time all day.

blinds are at 1200/2400 and I just got moved to a new table about 30 minutes ago and its way more active. Several HUGE stacks including the chip leader with around 400k and a couple others around 250k.

anyways UTG opens to 6k (he has about 250k) everyone folds to me in the SB and i make it 13k (I have about 130k to start hand) with two red aces…probably too small but I had just 3bet the hand before that on the button with AQ to about the same amount and took it down so figured I'd keep the same sizing and hope he comes over the top. he calls

flop Js 5c 5s

I lead out 17k and he raises to 70k

I shove thinking JJ probably wouldnt do this. looks to me more like a big spade draw, AJ, or possibly over pair. the 5 doesnt seem likely in his range as the UTG raiser aside from maybe A5s

he actually tanks for about 15 seconds and calls with 45s

and I lose my first $1500 buy-in tourny

fun experience. lot of other interesting spots I may post/ask about but for now I'm going to sleep

hmmm, his raise is huge on flop. i know i'm personally incapable of folding AA there but i think he has a 5 in his hand more often than not. i would want to know a little more about game flow…how much he's raising, does he have any sizing tells, etc. the only other possibilities IMO are that he slow played KK or he is on a complete bluff (in which case his raise size is absurd). him raising so big makes it unlikely he has just one jack in his hand but people do crazy things in live tournaments. tough spot

Game flow was pretty crazy. Lots of huge pots every other hand. I think this table had double the amount of chips of any other table.

Villian in this case had not been one of the crazier players up to this point. He made comments like had been splashing around but in the brief time I had been at the table he was pretty tight. So in the moment I put him on a pretty narrow range and I guess was hoping he would try and get more value out of JJ. Ax of spades, KK, QQ. Basically those are the ands I was hoping he has there.

That said, now that I got some sleep I think he has JJ or a 5 in his hand with that raise a lot. Small blind 3 betting the UTG raiser preflop has a big PP most of the time and he probably put me on QQ+. This could be the best street to get all your value if you think villian(me) has a hand he may not fold and the turn could slow down your action. K,A, spade.

I think he raised big for the purpose of inducing, although he could have accomplished the same thing by raising to 60K. The question I have for everyone is whether 3-betting to more ($19K?) is advisable. Additionally, how important is it that the previous 3-bet was also to 13K?

I don’t know how much comfort it is, but at least you didn’t have to come back the next day for the same result. It never feels good to lose 🙁

Absolutely can't ever think about folding here. Villain should never be making it 70k and folding so we should be getting it in there every time and expecting to see stuff like AJ, QQ and maybe AQss or something. Once we see a 70k raise we can rule out villain ever being a good player since that's not a balanced sizing at all, so we can assume he's going to have a wider getting-it-in range on this flop versus our 3-betting range than he should have. He's also never 'inducing' since his raise is too big for us to ever assume any kind of fold equity – if anything it makes less sense to do this with a value hand than it does with a bluff, since it's so hard for us to get it all-in.

For villain to have 54s in his range here is pretty bad, it's a massive slowroll on his part so commiserations on that. It's never nice to get slowrolled, even if he was genuinely thinking about it and was just nitrolling. Opening it preflop in his spot is meh, I guess it's not the worst, and flatting the 3-bet is fine too when you make it so small (would definitely make it bigger, especially if we know he's passive), but once he flops trips there it's ridiculous for him to even think about folding.

This is just a cooler. Don't worry too much about it. People play bad in live tournaments, so folding AA on a blank board like this to one raise is rarely likely to be a good idea. I think the more interesting question is what do we do with QQ here – I think I would struggle to fold that one too, but it's definitely a lot closer. We just don't have enough information to fold AA here, there aren't enough 5x or JJ combos in villain's range.
