This is based on a ICM situation that i had last night on Lock Poker. I am at work so i am unable to post the HH; But i was really concerned about my 4-bet all-in with 30bb's effectiver with 99 from the High jack. Yestersday i read an article here about setting goals and pacing yourself in mtt's. I found this read to be very valuable for me as an mtt player, and so i went for it.
The Mtt was the Lock $5 rebuy last night on the Revolution gaming network. My first goal was to reach $17,000 in chips to have the itm stack. Once accomplished i need around 34K to make the final 15 in which case i did also. Up to this point i was very happy with my play and followed my goals according to the article.
My next goal was to aquire 64k in chips to make the final table! I also ended up with 68K in hand with about 13 players left in the tournament. Around this time three consecutive hands occured during this point of the tournament. Blinds were around 1000/2000 ante 50 or so? can't really remember! UTG opens 2.5x with around 40+ bb's and i decide to flat my AKo from early MP. I ended up losing a small pot here to his 8Ts on a J-T-3-8-2 board.
The very next hand i open raised KTs from utg+2 and got a call from the sb. I c-bet and win the pot! The third hand in a row i open 99 from UTG with about 28bb's behind. The c/o who has not been active at all decided to 3 bet small to 8889 v.s my 4444 open. With 30bb's effective stacks and holding 99 v.s this players range and my image at the time. I really felt like he could be making a move here, since i had been so active the past three hands.
Also we were nearing the FT bubble, and i thought he may have percieved me as trying steal pots during this phase of the tournament. My goal at this point was to have 64-68K in chips to make the FT. So in fact i had accomplished this; And at the same time my thinking would be insta 4-bet shove here with 20-25 players left itm. But because we were so close to the fnal table; And at the time i was 4th in chips! Im really not sure if the risk was worth the reward here.
My heart is telling me that i could have found a better spot. But my gut was telling me that he was making a move; And if i was right and won a flip at best with my 99's. I would be chipleader at the final table and 60+ bb's deep after winning the hand, and with 12 players left! Does ICM play a part in this spot????? Can i find a fold here?? Am i a ***** if i fold? Can i flat 30 bigs here and jam flop with no Aces? Can i call smallish 3 bet and check fold?
My answer= I thought about it for about 8 seconds or so and 4 bet jammed. Honestly i had no plan!!!! And i feel like a huge donk for that!!!

I am playing on Lock now as well and I will tell you that you better know how to play with a short stack there, because from what I have seen, similar to merge, stacks are shallow and 20bb is right where you want to in regards to making a late run. In regards to the hand you are describing, I think that what concerns me here is that the villain you are describing in the hand “has not been that active”.
With what I have seen on the lower stakes, is the min raise 3 bet=monster, especially if the stacks left behind are short. If he has a bigger broadway hand such as ak, aq, i see the sizing larger because they are showing you that they aren't going to fold post and are a little more hesitant to play post. With the min raise, they are more than likely inducing spewage. Of course this can change from player to player, but the way you described the villain, he is min 3 betting you ep open looking for action imo.
In this spot and your stack, i definitely just call the 3 bet and evaluate post. You can still play your 9s for value theoretically if you are up against ak or aqss and check to see how the villain proceeds with the board texture. Worst case you c/f the flop and are in good position for later hands. By 4 bet shoving at best you are flipping here, and I just don't see the risk in it when you may have a better edge on the remaining field. I hope that this helps.

I agree with terbet, it looks like the villain has a premium here (1010+) and is looking for you to spew. I usually don't give players credit for 3 betting utg openers light, until I see otherwise. Also, you said he hadn't been active at all, so i doubt he is trying to pull a move here. how big was his stack exactly? I don't think he's 3 betting a worse pair, and his value range is probably something like 1010+, aq+ but like terbet said, he probably will 3 bet larger with his unpaired hands because he doesnt really want you to flat. It would be interesting to see the stacks behind him, becasue if there were some short stacks, then he is less likely to 3 bet light because he would have to call off.
I would't really worry about ICM considerations here because the pay jumps usually arent that high until you get down to a few people. If you think you have enough equity against his range then get the money in, but it looks like in this case you probably didnt. Also, don't be concerned about having “in the money” chips, or “final table” chips. It is nice to see that you're above chip average, but you can make runs with a short stack, and also lose huge chip leads. Just try to play every hand in the most ev way possible and your results will speak for themselves. It won't help to get frustrated if your stack is short, even if you are playing well. It also isn't good to try and protect a big stack to make the money/ft by not taking spots that you should.
It's close with your stack I think, and because he makes it so small, but it might just be best to fold to the 3 bet. I think you are getting 4-1 on a call or maybe a little better? What if the flop comes 672? Are you calling a bet? There is also the possibilty of not getting pair if you hit a set, if he has ak and misses. You are oop which makes the pot harder/trickier to play. I couldnt fault you for calling here, but only if you are prepared to check fold flops on which you had an overpair. The call would be strictly for a set mine or a flop like 678 where you would have to get the money in based on equity.
