Hey guys

Please have a look at the hand above. It was a $11 SCOOP Event which I played this weekend.

It was a tough spot, but I thought the call with AQo was correct, but I’m not sure. What do you think?

Thanks for the help!

Have you tried putting together some possible ranges for the Villain and looking at your equity vs those ranges? That should always be your first step when analyzing a decision whether to call a shove pre-flop.

I would say also some information about the situation in the tournament and villain.

calling a cold 4 bet shove of 50bb with AQo, you should have really strong read about him doing that with a wide range. basically you are flipping with a big chunk of this range and doing pretty bad vs AK.

I did some calculation for you 🙂

villain range:

1- TT+, AQs+; AKo you are -10bb ev

2-99+, AJs+; AQo+ –> -4bb ev

3-you have to add AJo in his range to start to be profitable, +1bb, even if you don’t put AJo but all his pocket pair you’re doing it wrong

so do you think this guy will cold 4 bet with AJo, ATo, and a bunch of Ax, Kx in order for your call to be profitable?

at Nash equilibrium your call is +EV but he has to shove 15.5%, 33+ A7s+ A5s ATo+ K9s+ KJo+ QTs+ JTs

Thanks for the help guys… I think you are right, that he’s definitely not shoving a range, that I can call profitable against.

He’ll probably cold 4bet AJ, but thats the top of his range I guess. Was lucky to flip this time.

While it could happen I don’t think you should assume someone cold 4bet shoves AJ for 50bb. The only time that would be a good play is if BTN always opens if folded to and if SB 3bet alot from the blinds (SB specifically). And even then I think a shove is bad with AJ. A cold 4bet to around 95k looks stronger and gives possibility to fold if SB actually has picked up a hand and doesn’t close action meaning if BTN shoves and SB calls action isn’t closed as BB can still 6-bet here. That would make any action from SB as call or 6-bet shove a very strong indication that AJ is never good.

Unless I’ve seen it I wouldn’t put such hands in a players range with cold 4-betting shove 50bb. The only time I would assume a wider range then normal is if the tournament i progressive knockout and the BTN has a high value or if the BB is a complete maniac.
