With the chart that I have, it says a shove with the 19bb.  I think that when making this decision the times the blinds are going to go up are critical as well.  Are they about to go up at any moment or did the level just start?  When I am in these spots, I hear the Big Dog say he wants to keep his stack @20bb, and to do so you need to shove here to use the fold equity you have and to stay ahead of the blinds.  Now, by shoving we know that if called we are going to be behind the majority of the time, and in most case scenarios we are happy to see a medium pair and flipping.

I don't like open folding because now you have given away a percentage of your stack with the bb coming next hand, plus Big Dog will say not to open fold with 20bb.  Plus, something I tell myself when in these spots, is that I am playing to win the tourney and not just inch up the pay out structure.  To do so, you need to win flips, suck out being a 70/30 dog, etc. If called an you see AQ, you can bink your 10, roll out your flush, or hit a straight.  Plus by jamming the 19+bb many of the villains know they can call only with the tip top of their range, and if you run in to a monster, unlucky.

I would like to hear what others say about this as well.  I actually just posted in the suggestion forum for the pros to do a series on stacks of 20-30bb with antes, because this is a level that most struggle with.  Best of luck at the tables!!

ok for argument sake lets say you have 20bbs, if you know your table pretty well as im guessing you do being at the final 2 tables. you have a few options, one play that i like is pretty much rasing any two cards right here utg when you have 20 bbs left. its like your last chance to stay above that mark.  If you get 3 bet you can judge accordingly if you want to 4 bet shove over certain players and feel pretty comfortable about it. i mean your 7 handed so ATs is pretty large and i cant see myself folding here to anyone thats been agro. if you rasie and tight nit thats just trying to make the ft shoves over you easy fold.

Yes it is a shove. Or you can raise/call for value you if have been active and think some1 is going to reshove on you lighter or 3 bet get it in lighter than a10s. I prefer the less variance play and shove it. Raise/calling aq/ak.

I like shoving better than a raise here and I'll give you a few reasons

– two big stacks can squeeze easy putting pressure on  you to call all in with a weaker hand, if you raised 2.5x now you're down to 17bb with the blinds hitting you, I think it's a fold if you raise and they squeeze

– your stack is big enough to seriously damage the big stacks

– jamming forces the other stacks to wake up with a big hand, makes it harder to squeeze or 3 bet with J10s and call your jam feeling priced in

– down to 14/15 players and people are going to tighten their range for calling all ins

– I have seen people lay down hands like A10, AJ, AQ in spots like this near the end of a tourny trying to move up the pay ladder

– you have outs if called by AJ, AQ, AK, KK, QQ…..

anyhow these are some things that cross my mind.  could be wrong let me know what ya think

I actually think its fine to fold here. there’s a good chance that you find easier spots to chip up here in an $11 buy in with this stack. depending on villains being weak/tight/scared i think min raise stealing in late position is even fine with anything over 15bb. they won’t be exploiting you nearly as much as in higher buy in tourneys. remember to target the right villains though. if u get to a flop villains won’t be nearly good enough most of the time, we have the tpe edge.

I think of what bigdog advocates in these situations work perfect for him with his super agro style and in the higher buy ins where exploitable play will be exploited. i personally think there are enough weak players around small stakes that, as long as your intelligent about it and pick your villains carefully, you will get away with technically exploitable play.
