This hand is from the weekly major $109 on my local site that has a pretty soft field.  There are about 90/400 players remaining with the top 60 getting paid and the blinds are 1.75k/3.5k with a 400 ante.

It folds around to the SB who raises to 8.5k.  He did this the previous orbit and I 3bet to 22k and he shipped it in and I folded.  This time around I have Q9o and just call.

Flop [20k] is K Q 5 with two clubs.  SB leads for 7k and I call.  I don’t see any case for raising here as there aren’t really any turns I’m scared of and villain is never folding better.

Turn [34k] is an off suit 8.  Villain rips for 70k.  Hero ???

What does villain’s value range look like here?  I don’t see a king ever playing this way and two pair+ probably don’t want to blow me out of the pot.  In game I couldn’t come up with any hands that made sense and when that’s the case I generally think the are full of it.

I ended up calling and he rolled over Q8 for a turned two pair.

I’m still trying to figure out if I got levelled into punting off or if I just ran into it here.

You’re probably roughly indifferent to calling, which is why you struggled to find the best play. Why did you conclude he couldn’t have a K or better?

It was an exploitative read based on the way the player pool on this particular site generally plays.

Now that I’ve had some time to think about it I think villain’s exact hand is actually a pretty good overbetting candidate as it unblocks a lot of the hands that might be willing to call it off.  I kind of doubt he was thinking about it that way but I can see how it could make sense.

This was also at the end of a 10 hour session and was my last table.  I don’t think this factored into my decision at all but fatigue is a thing so it could have played a role.

Most of the time I fold because I lose to almost every value hand he could have, minus weak queens, and is he raising with weaker queens than Q8? Maybe.

A lot of people justify overbets with kings because they are scared of flush draws. The light flop bet could just be a weak player betting small first.

Small lead and jam is an odd line, but it makes a lot of sense with his particular hand, which sucks because you can’t put him on that easily.

Is he really tooling out with an underpair or AJ or AT on that board? Maybe with Ac. You beat a flush draw and TJ, which make sense.

Tough spot. I fold most of the time, but I can definitely justify a call against some players.

That was my issue.  I just couldn’t think of a hand that beats me that would play this way.

Maybe given the stage of the tournament I should lean toward a fold here.  We are about 30 off the money and I started the hand with about an average stack.

I think this has to be far too much of a generalisation. I see many players on every site play exactly top 2 pair precisely like this. Not that I think they are correct to do so.
