hey RFB/mods
i think it was before my time, but what was the “study group”? how exactly did it work?
i would think that the member video upload would operate in a similar way – once a week or whatever one person uploads their video and then everyone else comments on it, and then it gets passed on to the next person.
i know you have renamed the video discussions to include member videos, but i was just wondering whether the study group forum might be a better place for it, and video discussion could be kept for the pro videos only.
so i would have “Member Video Uploads and Study Group” and the pro video discussions forum would stay as “Video Discussions”
what do you guys think? i havent reallyy seen anyone post in teh study group forum since i have been on the site, so i am not sure what it was used for.
Actually, what you suggest makes much more sense (that's what i get for doing forum adminstration at 2am).
The study group was a txt file HH review that was led by former moderator Jdog. It operated in the manner you suggested. A member would send a text file and he led a discussion each way much in the way you suggested. I will reorganize as per your suggestion because it's a better way. I renamed it Member Video Study Group because i don't expect too many non video studies.
Thanks!
RFB

sweet i reckon thats better
now we can keep it as a general study group where someone could still submit a hand history or a video (but i agree it would prolly mostly be vids)

RFB, just a bump
have you managed to bust out that article on how to record a video properly for the member video uploads?
(for others that might not know, i was discussing with RFB about writing an article on how to set up the cam recording software like the pros do, thus making the quality of the member videos high and consistent)
if you haven't yet thats cool i just thought i would ask.
once again, if you would like me to write anything regarding setups etc i am more than happy to do this (i have had a small play around with cam recording software so if you gave me the parameters you use i could frame an article around that)
i could even do it as a video tutorial and upload that.
just thought it would be cool to get this going pretty soon (i also want to record some videos myself :D)
How does this sound? Let me know what you think of the below and then i'll post and sticky. Feel free to make edits.

For those of you looking to join in and start posting your own member videos for group study review, First you need software to record your screen.
Camstudio is free, and Camtasia Studio is the fully-featured paid version that we use at TPE. You can probably just get by with Camstudio. The quality of recording isn't as high but it's definetly usable for these videos. If you use camstudio, you just download and install then click record. It records in avi format and doesn't come with a whole bunch of customimzation options, but you can set some options like your screen size. Make sure you set the audio device to your current microphone.
As a tip, don't use your laptop mic. The sound quality is generally pretty bad.
Once you've saved your file then you can upload to the member blog area by following the instructions that were given to you when you signed up for a member video account.
If you'd like access to post videos just send an email to support@tournamentpokeredge.com requesting member video posting access and we will hook you up.

sounds good
so when you guys record videos, you don't have to set up anything, you just click record?
i havent done it in a while but what i remember was having to set quite a few options up so that the video was watchable but without an astronomical file size. maybe i was using some other software.
i will download cam studio (as i think most people will be using this) and have a play around tonight.

i was thinking i could record something like this (but better) and show people directly how to set up the recorder for doing a poker video.
the video would be something like this
1. things you need to download – camstudio, universal replayer/hem, codec
2. settings for camstudio
3. show people how to set the screen up so that it shows only the replayer
4. show them how to upload to their own member blog
video shouldn't be more than 10 mins in total
what do you think?
October 6, 2010
hey,
if you could do the video tutorial (or even a text based one would suffice i think) that would be excellent – i have spent about 90 minutes tonight mucking around with it, and i couldn't stop the picture from flickering, and in any case the size was about 8 meg per minute which is obviously too high.
thanks

found out that the weird flickering was due to something wrong in vlc media player rather than the recording.
going to have another play around tonight and see if i can get something working.
October 6, 2010
ok, so i have had another go, and i have got some pretty decent quality for around 100 meg per hour for an avi file – this is for someone reviewing their play using the universal/HEM replayer, with a resolution of 1024×768, which fits the replayer nicely.
i have used camstudio, virtualdub and the xvid codec.
i will make a quick vid on what i have done, and if you want to make a better “official” vid i am cool with that also, but this is a 5 minute hack's version of it so that people can get started.
October 6, 2010
just uploaded it to my blog – let me know what you think. its pretty rough but hopefully someone can follow it.

hey
i noticed that it does have a slight problem in the browser as well, i will try something different tonight.
October 6, 2010
i managed to find out how to use the h.264 codec and i have re-uploaded the video but it still doesn't work in the quicktime player.
im afraid i cant do much better than that without using camtasia.
any ideas RFB/preator?

guys, i think i am ready to relaunch the member review videos, here is how i plan to go about it
1. start a thread telling everyone that the study group is relaunched and let them know how to upload a video.
2. as part of this, first person to upload their video will get reviewed first.
3. subsequent uploads by people will get reviewed on a weekly basis, and i will choose who is the next video to get reviewed. this will mostly go in order of uploading but significant weight will be given to people who review other's videos, and you wont get a vid reviewed until you have made a significant review effort in at least one other video. if i think some video is particularly interesting/significant/different i might bump it up the list.
i think its best to leave it as an open ended group so there will be no “members” as such, which will encourage people who can only contribute occasionally
any other ideas? if not, i will go ahead with this in a few hours and try and get the ball rolling
Hey Benny, your plan looks perfect above.
I played around with CamStudio a bit and realized there is a “save to swf” button. This might solve the problem with quicktime running in the browser. I tested and it seems to work well.
Right now i can't get the window to resize but i will have our programmer look at it in the morning.
