Hey TPE – I got the email below from a site I'm subscribed to – Becoming Minimalist (me subscribing is a joke in itself, you should see the state of my garage, I daren't open the door in case something falls on top of me!), anyways I read it and thought it would be useful to share with you all, play hard, study hard, post hands in the forum etc but if you end up on the wrong side of the coin remember to persevere and hopefully one day we'll all meet at a final table wink. Cheers!

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” ― Thomas A. Edison

On a personal note, I’m playing crummy tennis these days. And by crummy tennis, I mean really crummy tennis. In fact, I am 0-5 in our neighborhood Men’s Singles Tennis League—the exact same league I won last fall! In fact, not long ago, I was actually losing so badly to a fellow competitor I was tempted to quit. But then, I remembered that my 6-year old daughter is struggling to learn how to tell time in school… and I decided that I had to persevere.

You see, my kids are important to me. As a result, I work hard and intentionally to help them develop important like skills. By important life skills, I don’t just mean reading, writing, and arithmetic, I also mean kindness, humility, responsibility, discipline, and perseverance. And perseverance is one we’ve been working on for quite some time.

My daughter has a tendency to get frustrated when she doesn’t get something right the first time. This is, of course, not unusual. But when the frustration too quickly escalates to resignation, I often step in and encourage her to persevere.

I understand that life can be very difficult at times. I realize many of the most important concepts she will learn in school and life will take time and effort. I have come to understand that nobody gets life right the first time. And in those moments, perseverance is an essential life discipline to draw upon. We will never reach our full potential until we learn to push through the frustration… no matter how difficult our circumstances may be.

Of course, the very nature of perseverance requires that we face trials in life. We can not learn perseverance without experiencing difficulty. This often makes it a painful skill to learn. But also, one of the most rewarding.

People who become the most in life have learned the skill of perseverance. They are the ones who refuse to give in regardless of the score… or the current trial they are facing.

My dear friend, today, persevere.

Wow. This is an awesome post. The Edison quote is particularly relevant for MTT players.

Trust me, I know from experience….success comes suddenly, without warning (although definitely not without preparation), and in bunches. Perseverance is absolutely crucial.

Yeah, the below post (again taken from a site I'm subscribed to) is pretty relevant too – it came just at the right time, I'm having a -$140 month with not many cashes after a +$140 month last month, it feels like I'm going backwards but it's important to keep at it, read the forums, watch the vids, think about the game, try to develop a winning mentality….

I have been writing about goals quite a bit lately.

We all have them.

Often, we put them off. (Sometimes for years.)

We tell ourselves that we don't have time. And even darker things like, “I could never do that.”

But, you will never know if you don't try.

What would it take for you to try?

What Would It Take to Get There?

The other day, I was talking with a friend about long term goals.

It was an amazing discussion, and I plotted out many great and wonderful projects. Yet, the outcomes seemed so far out of reach.

After all, they are just dreams at this point.

How do you make those big goals a reality?

What would it take to get there?

Getting There Isn't Easy

The first thing to realize is that big goals are not going to happen overnight.

“There are no quick fixes, shortcuts, or magical solutions.”

This reality check stops many people in their tracks.

They want it now. They want it quick. They want it with no sacrifice.

Now that we have gotten that thought out of the way, how do you get there from here?

It's not going to be easy.

Sacrifice – To get there from here is going to require sacrifice. You are going to have to give up something. Maybe many things. Whether it is your time, money or attention… getting there always has a cost. Are you willing to pay it?

Focus – You can't get there without extreme focus. Laser-like focus. Your goal can't be something you look at once in a while… you have to monitor your progress constantly. It has to be front-and-center and on your mind at all times.

Effort – It won't be easy. You will have to push your limits. Exert yourself far beyond anything else you have done. If it were effortless, then everyone would be able to get there.

Every Day – Getting there requires taking a step every single day. You may not make forward progress. You may slip, stumble, or even backslide in your journey. But, you have to take that step every single day.

And that is how you get from here to there…

I hope you make it… wherever there is for you.

Great post and thank you. Im raising a 3 year old and learning about perseverance and humility.

When I came to Cali I had $400 in my pocket 2 pairs of pants and one pair of shoes. Every one told me I wouldnt make it.

I worked day and nite. Going to classes in the day and working at nite. Struggled for years without a car in LA which is like being in the ocean without a raft.  I beat myself down for 15 years doing everything I could.

Last year I worked with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in Men In Black 3. Followed that up with working directly with Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman. Then this year got to work with my all time favorite Al Pacino with Chris Walken and Alan Arkin in Stand Up Guys. Now I just completed a long stint on True Blood for HBO and Blizzards “World of Warcraft”.

For years they laughed at me. Slept on couches. Caught the bus. Cooked on a hot plate. But I never lost focus.

I still struggle. But now for my boy.

Cool story.

I would say what you are doing and achieving is far more than someone who was born into money and is living the so called life. Life is supposed to be about hardship, hard work and perserverance to get you through and out the other side to whatever it is you are trying to achieve.

Big up to you. Keep persevering.
