Something I've noticed, and to be honest I wish I couldn't, whenever Im feeling a little blue I seem to play better poker. Not when Im down from poker but from family or friend issues. I seem to not suffer from fancy play syndrome when in these states. I would like have this grounding feeling without outside issues being the cause. If I seem a liitle down in my tone its because I am. My best friend of 27yrs., his mother was diagosed with stage 3 lung cancer today. A reminder that Life is to short to not make every day count.

to be honest, i am completely the opposite.
if i am playing poker to take my mind off of something esle, then i almost inevitably play horribly.
you are definitely right about life being too short though.
This is exactly why I create a Pre Game Routine, as for every player, how they feel when they are playign their best is so unique to each individual.
I aks you Krul Hul, exactly what mindset is created when you experience these situations with family and friends? Is it a sense of patience and acceptance fot the game of poker? That losing a flip, or getting sucked out on doesnt really matter in the big scheme of things?
The more you can decipher what is your state of mind when playing your best, simply just need to program this state into you before you play each session 🙂
BTW, I am sorry for your friends mum and hope she makes a speedy recovery!!!

Its hard to explain other than instead of these emotions getting in the way, they seem to clear me of all emotions. Your description of patience, acceptance, flips and suck outs is bang on. I find when in a good mood I can become emotionally connected to a result (good and bad) that leads to emotions deciding what and how I play. The closest I get to this void feeling from no outside hampers is when I'm close to the end my roll. Same somber approach and again same kind of positive results
Thanks for the kind words in regards to Margo.

For me I need to be in the mood for poker, when I play on a whim my variance is high. I usually plan my poker sessions days before and get pschyed about them. I treat it like when I played sports, the whole day is a game. When I do that I play better, but more important my tilt factor is lower. Poker does take my mind off of mundane issues and I will use it as an escape, but it only works when I plan my poker ahead.
