i havent played either, but i would have thought the ROI would be infinitely less in the WCOOP main than the WSOP main.

Variance and ROI are both going to be higher in WSOP simply because of more people playing the tournament. Variance is absurd on both though because they are huge fields. Overall the WCOOP is certainly the tougher tournament, though it's still a great value for a $5K with plenty of satellite winners and what not.

Thanks Andrew.. I guess even the online rec player who qualified from satellites are still better than the live rec players in wsop Main? Although you guys didn’t seem to consider the time factor – if it only take a fraction of time to play an online tourney, then that may compensate for your ROI.. It might be interesting to do a study comparing the structure deepness of these two tournies factoring the difference in # of hands play per hour , tho I would imagine Wcoop main is fairly deep too since it is the main event and Pokerstar should know a few things about tourney structure.
Yeah the online players are probably better but also there just aren’t as many of them. Basically all the best players at WSOP play WCOOP plus some (people not 21, people in countries without tax treaties with US), but not all the same rec players play.
Yes there is more time and expense involved in playing a live tourney, but the buyin is also twice as large.
Really there’s not a lot of reason you’d have to choose between the two unless you are taking a single shot primarily for the experience, in which case you should definitely go for WSOP.

sorry I just realize that duration shouldn't affect the ROI, but it does affect the hourly rate. I have to think the WCOOP main hourly should be higher if it only cost 1/3 time on avg? obv variance is still a bitch and prob higher online because of the competition and aggressiveness… I heard story that good player bought a scoop package and didn't cash once 🙁
A better structure (more hands/level) will mean better ROI for the better players and more negative ROI for everyone else. Variance isn't technically a function of win-rate, but a smaller edge does mean greater likelihood of a losing streak and risk of ruin, which is what most people are really worried about when they talk about variance.
