I think most would agree that note taking online is not only a good idea, but essential especially if you are playing with a similar player pool. My question is do any of you currently take notes in live tournaments, whether it be pen/paper or on your phone? I don’t mean your hand history type notes, but notes similar to those would take online, e.g. hands you have seen villains open in different positions, certain lines they have taken, deviations from standard plays, etc.
I’ve never taken any notes playing live, other than the occasional note to remember a hand history so I can post it later, but I plan on playing some Borgata Winter Open events starting this weekend and it crossed my mind that maybe it would be worthwhile. There seem to be a few free apps out there that allow you to write notes about a particular seat (you can also sneakily add their picture if you dare), but wanted to see what TPE thought about doing this? I thought that phone notes would work better as they are less obvious to your opponent, i.e. writing in a notebook could lead your opponents to think your are doing more thinking than they are giving you credit for.
Any thoughts or experiences are much appreciated!
Thanks,
Matt

this is going to be kind of long, i only play live so i take lots of different kinds of notes…
1. i don’t worry about what people will think of my note taking (or anything else i feel like doing at the table for that matter) if anything it makes me look like a better player and can intimidate my opponents before i even play a hand.
2. i don’t take notes that i plan on using during the session, they are for study and analysis later. i would find it impossible and distracting to be referring back to them during the game.
3. i take notes on all of my significant hands, i developed my own shorthand so i can quickly write down what i will need to know for hand analysis later. i pre mark my pages with columns and other ways of organizing the info so i can quickly write down what i need during and after the hand. this is the only way i have found to do meaningful analysis of how i am playing
4. i take notes on specific bets, raises or situations. it helps me identify good strategies or leaks. an example would be noting 3 betting from the button vs just calling. i will get 100 examples to find out the difference between them. I might find that it is more profitable to just call from the button, (unless that would be an obvious big blunder…) and i will adjust my game
5. i sometimes track my dealt cards if i feel like i am card dead. it tells me if i really am card dead or just feeling sorry for myself…
i have never really played much on line, so your software might track useful stuff that you could develop your own note taking methods for.
hope this helps
