Hey,
I’m at Cherokee running STTs. How much do you tip the dealer? They’re raking 12% from 125s and 10% from 200s. W don’t want to be cheap, but I don’t want to hurt my ROI too much either. The dealers are getting paid hourly right? Is this a waiter situation where they’re basically just making tips? Or is it more like extra?

I would inquire about how much is withheld from the prizepool for dealers. There are often two separate “rakes” – an administrative fee which is basically the casino’s profit and non-personnel expenses then a fee for “staff” which is split, not always evenly, between dealers and floor staff. So when you tip, you probably aren’t tipping your specific dealer but rather contributing to a pool. My understanding is that dealers do rely upon these tips for a living wage. They get some money from the staff fee. The main time when I don’t tip is when tournaments have some additional “dealer appreciation bonus” where you pay an extra $20 or something at the start of the tournament and get extra chips.
The STTs at WSOP at least used to pay out weird amounts like $1076 where it was pretty well understood that that extra $76 should get tipped off. Maybe Cherokee is not like that though. Depending on what’s already withheld from the prize pool for dealers, I may tip something like 5% on small prizes and 1% on big ones (and not tip at all when I don’t cash).
In addition to any fairness arguments in favor of tipping, there are also practical ones. If you intend to play at Cherokee in the future, then you have an interest in insuring that good dealers consider it worth their time to make the trek. If they don’t make good money, then they won’t come back, and you’ll be stuck with whatever temp employees then casino can train up in two weeks.

Thanks!
I’ve been talking to the dealers, and they all seem to be from Vegas and they travel with the circuit. The dealers in the sit n gos have all been excellent. They seem to like the gig (one dealer was complaining that he only got 3 circuit events this season). Interestingly, some dealers were also saying how this crew works the Horseshoe in the summer because the WSOP main event treats the dealers so poorly but that’s a different story… I did play the casino daily deepstack and some of the dealers in that were VERY green. I assume that’s because of staffing demands. Nice people doing their best but new and afraid to mess up.
I’ve been playing 125s that pay out 1100. I’ve been making sure the dealer gets 50 total (usually chop the tip too) which seems fair for an hourly for them (that’s more than I make at my day job). Obviously you tip something. I hope that’s fair? It seems a little cheap to give someone $50 and put 1k in your pocket. But looking at my overall win rate it’s about 10%
Anyway, thanks for the response, and thanks for the premium pod cast on sitngos. They’ve been very good to me so far.
