Charity Tournament Strategy

Hello all,

I'm playing in a charity event in Raleigh tomorrow and the first prize is two tickets to the superbowl.  There will be 100 people.  Starting stack is 5,000 chips.   Blinds will be 25/50, and will go up every 20 minutes.   I expect there to be poker enthusiasts, casual players, sharks, fish and everyone in-between.   The final table will have nice prizes, but the first spot is really the only one that matters.   Any advice on how to approach this strategically?   Given that we only start with 100 big blinds, and that within the first hour we'll be down to 25BB, I guess it's one of those tournaments in which you have to be lucky, and probably play ABC poker given how varied the field will be.   I wish I were posting on going to a big tournament in AC or Vegas, but oh well, this is as good as it gets for now…   wink

Hey Bluebird…I've played in this tournament before.  If my experience holds, you will find that 7 out of 8 players are really bad.  Lots of limping.  Lots of calling of raises with A7o, etc.

My suggestion is, be patient and when you get big hands, play them fast.  Avoid bluffing because they think A high is good and will call.

Wish I could make it over from Cary for the tourny, but dont think Im going to be able to.

Thanks guys for the advice!  I didn't get to read your advice before playing, but will def. take it into account next time.   I wasn't patient enough and tried to chip up early, but instead got knocked out.   Killingbird is right:  lots of limpers and passive play in general.
