Hey Guys,

I’m a new TPE member I would like some insight from more experienced players regarding my local casino’s mtt.

My local casino offers 3 regular live poker mtt per week. I have played them twice so far and the field was extremely soft. I won the tournament the first time for just under 2k$, and lost to a cooler an hour in the second time (full against quads). I worked as a card dealer there in the past and I know most of the players there are not poker players, but rich blackjack and baccara gamblers who are taking a break from gambling thousands of dollars by playing a relatively cheap poker tournament. All this to say, even if I am no where near being a strong player, I very clearly have an edge over this particular field.

My main concern is that the rake seems really high. Online, I mostly play on pokerstars and it seems like they make sure every mtt is profitable. Let me outline the details of my casino’s mtt:

Twice a week: 80$ total for 75$ buy in (60$+15$) for 4k chips + 5$ optional tip for dealers to get an additionnal 1k chips.

Once a week: 100$ total for 95$ buy in (80$+15$) for 15k chips +5$ optional tip for dealers to get an additionnal 5k chips.

The value of the extra 5$ seems way too good to pass on, plus a lot of the dealers are my ex co-workers and I feel like it would just be wrong not to tip them for 5$ even is the value was not there, so that is a non issue.

It seems obvious to me that there is more value in the 100$ tournament as the rake+tip % is lower. However, this one is new so I it is the 80$ one that I played twice so far. My question is… do you guys think those tournament can be profitable in the long run? Is 20% and 25% too high or still acceptable on a soft field? What is an acceptable rake for a profitable tournament?

Thanks!

It really does depend on the field, there’s no bright line of “X is simply too high”. The question is whether your edge > rake, and against sufficiently bad opponents it is possible to overcome really nasty rake. The rake on the $80 MTT is really 33%, as you put $60 wager $60 and pay $20 or 1/3 of that in rake. Probably it’s not a very well structured tournament either, which makes it hard to have a big edge even if your opponents are bad. So I’d say it’s quite tough to beat that, and if you have an edge, it’s very small. The $100 is a bit more reasonable. Are you going to be or feel compelled to leave a big tip if you cash or win? That’s another source of “rake” to factor in.

Thank you for the information.

I will take a few shots at the 100$ to test the field and will decide if it is worth playing in the long run from there.

This 100$ is said to be a “deep stack turbo with 15 min blinds”.
