As suggested by Deal, one of our first members, we’ve created a forum to let members introduce themselves and give us an idea their backgrounds and what they’d like to learn at TPE.

I’ll go first:

I am a co-founder of TournamentPokerEdge.com.  I’m not one of our pros, but an serious amateur player, with a day job, who has a passion for poker and spends most of his free time thinking about how to get better.

I am marketing manager for a software company by day and  live on Long Island with my wife and two children.  I usually play 4 or 5 nights a week. Fortunately I’ve had a little success and play anywhere from $26 to $215 regularly.  I’ve taken down the 10r and 70k on PS a few times and even won the nightly 100k.  But my biggest achievement was an FTOPS ME final table where I finished 7th (lost a coin flip for chiplead!).

I think I have a good idea of what us regular guys (and gals) are looking for from a training site.  I’ve subscribed to every one of them at one point or another.  I found tournament focus to be lacking.  So, instead of complaining, I started my own site to deliver what I felt was missing.  Killingbird and I go back a long way and he was a natural business partner.  I knew Panda and Hag from a private board I helped start and met Wein at the WSOP ME last year.  He introduced me to Big Dog.

I talked to many pros but I felt that the 4 we assembled here had not only the skills in MTTs but the ability to talk about the concepts and teach others, which is why we began this business together.

I’m going to be a contributor to the site in several ways.  The pros will look at my hand histories, I may even make a video or two to pass off to the pros where I explain the spots I find to be tough.  In general though I am looking for some help in taking home more tourneys where I make the final two tables.  I make a lot of them but seem to make a big mistake that prevents me from getting to the top 3 as much as I probably should.

I am also looking for some help with calling ranges of big shoves – I think I call too lightly.  I’d also like to become a better hand reader – one thing I’ve noticed about our pros is that they generally have a good idea of what an opponent has by the river and are able to get them off their hand with big shoves when they feel like they cannot be called with something that has marginal showdown value.

Sorry for the tl;dr, looking forward to hearing from more of you!

Hi, my name is Greg and I am a part time player.  I work about 50hrs a week as a Fedex Courier and then play 2-3 nights a week.  This kind of sucks because I have to be at work at 6am so there are some days when I dont get to bed until about 2am.  I make good money working at Fedex, but my wife is a stay at home mom( we have a 5yo and a 2yo).  Poker has become my way of doing fun things either around the house or just doing fun things on vacation.  I like where poker fits into my life right now and would love to make a little more obv. to help with the fact we need a new car.  I would love to say that I bought it with poker winnings.  So far this year I have won about $13k with a first in a $26 KO on Tilt for a little over $5k.  I prolly tend to play a bit high for my bankroll, but since I only play a few night a week I dont see that as a huge deal.  I keep it in between the $26-$75’s on Ft(my main roll is here).  Then I also will play some micro stuff on Pstars in the $5-$20 range.  I really dont see myself playing much higher than the $120’s but would love to just increase my overall chances of taking down my share of tournaments.

Hey my name is Mike and I’m an alcoholic!!!  Anyway….I’ve been playing very-part time since late 2004.  Due to a very hectic schedule I am only able to play once….or maybe twice a month.   But when I do play it is for a good 12-14 hour session.  I have had some success playing and have had a few MTT victories over the years.  I would like to spend more time on my game this summer, and try to improve my game as much as I can.  For the time being when I am playing you can find me on the 5 dollar and below SNG’s and MTT’s on stars and FT.   Good luck to the site and to all involved!!

Peace,

Oakes

Hey guys, Cash game player (mostly 1/2) here looking to learn MTTs. Been playing for about a year and real real excited to start watching vids. I also have a random question that I’ve been wondering if any experienced mtt’er could answer: If my BR is 40k, but I’m new tourneys what buyin levels should I be looking to play?

it sorta depends on your goals.  Are you going to continue playing cash to reduce variance?  Is this your sole source of income?  Personally, i prefer at least 200 usually 300x my ABI in BR.  So with 40k you can easily maintain an ABI over $100 and be ok.  That sort of buyin will allow you to play everything in the medium range and up to the nightly 100k and 75k.   It will also allow you to play $215s on weekends.  You probably shouldn’t be playing 100r and 1ks.

That said, being new to MTTs I’d make what I posted above your goal, not how you start out.  The midstakes are certainly beatable and if you’re a winning 1/2 player you’ll probably adjust fast enough but with variance and the learning curve you’re better served proving that you can win at ABI $50 – $60 before moving up too fast.

That doesn’t mean you can’t take shots, but I’d keep the bigger stuff as shots until you start to feel comfortable and show some decent consistency in making deep runs.

PM me anytime if you want to chat in more depth – BR management is something I take pretty seriously.

first, welcome greg and mike!

second, @cheeks: RFB’s advice is pretty solid, although i think being a winning 200NL grinder you can immediatly start playing up to the 109s and at least 20rs if not 30rs.

in terms of strategy i’d recommend really focusing on your 15-30BB play and getting comfortable with the way you ought to be optimally playing a 15BB stack, a 20BB stack, a 25BB stack, a 30BB stack, etc. your options change drastically from 30-35BB and 20BB. this stuff is the meat of MTTs and imo really important to get a solid feel for before i start regularly playing the sunday 215s.

i think RFBs point that you want to be confident that you are a solid winner in the games before playing the higher variance MTTs is a salient one. obviously you have an edge in the games as is, and if you put some work into your MTT game you should become a big winner in the games. but i think that the learning curve for cash players in MTTs can be really steep at first and it’s probably good to get through that in smaller games and then up your avg buyin as opposed to just jumping right into an avg buyin of 100-120$ and learning the hard way.

once you do feel confident in your MTT game i’d suggest not only playing all the sunday 215s, but also the two sunday 500s–one on stars and one on UB–that play much deeper than most MTTs, as well as teh early 100r on stars. and i’d also recommend gridning satellites into the weekly 1ks and taking shots when you win seats. those tourneys have great structures and short fields and give you a shot at a huge score without having to get through a giant field.

that’s all i have for now. welcome to TPE and please let us know any suggestions you might have.

Hello everyone.  My name is Nick.  Ive been playing tournament poker for a while now.  I started playing micro sng’s and tourneys on pokerstars…didn’t do to well, lost the br, and quit.  I swore to never play again because I thought it was a massive waste of money.  I found that even though i had that mindset about the game, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.  I was in denial, but I was an addict you could say.  I had to figure out how some people were consistent winners so I read all of the books I could get my hands on and that definitely helped with the basics of the game.  I reloaded on stars and opened an account on full tilt, where I do most of my playing these days, this time with much better success.  I started reading all the posts on twoplustwo and pocketfives, and have been sweating a lot of the pros in hopes of picking some things up here and there.  I have never joined a training site before, but I really enjoy sweating bigdogs tourneys and I saw him talking to someone about this site coming live soon and I knew I had to join.

I play micro stakes tourneys on mostly full tilt and very occasionally pokerstars and Im hoping this site and its community of players will help with my game.  More specifically gathering chips at the mid levels, I tend to nurse a stack instead of use it, and of course the all important end game aspects.

Much success to the site and I hope a bunch of us can take our games to the next level.  Good luck at the tables!!!

Mud – first, Welcome!!  ALso hit me up if you ever want to chat over AIM during a session.  I play alot of lower stakes MTTs, and struggle with some of your same challenges (mid stages, building stacks during these stage, etc) and would be happy to share thoughts on hands and and spots during a session.  Obviously this won’t replace posting hands here for feedback from the pros, but i find it can help to talk things out while in the heat of the action sometimes.

Hello everyone, my name is Dan. Ive been playing poker for about 8 months and i have read numerous books and educated my self in a short amount of time. Poker is more than a hobby to me, its a passion and i love it.  I usually play stts and hu sngs, but i really want to move to the mtt game, and eventually play mtts 90 percent of the time. I joined this site to improve my tournament game and move up in stakes.  I dont play as much as i would like this part of the year, but once june comes around i will be playing a lot and trying to build my roll on FT.  Lately, ive been watchin the videos and educating myself while playing a little poker.  THis seems to be an awesome site and im looking forward to learning lots of new things.

HI

I play as RedRaidersTT on Pokerstars and am currently playing poker everyday.

I have been educating myself in the game by reading books watching videos and so far I am very impressed by this site.

I’m looking for more literature or videos on the Early stages of tournament play as the videos take you through mostly the middle/late stages where chips have already been accumulated.

I am looking forward to learning from all the pros in this site

Hi guys,

The name is Bryan Byrd. My name on Pokerstars and FullTiltPoker is BBird40 (On UB its BBWolf40). I got my name from what people used to call me in highschool, Big Bird. So I shortened it to BBird then added the numbers of my B-day December 28th (which is 40..lol).

I was first introduced to card games at 6 years old by my degenerate grandma and my dad. They taught me the works: Spades, Hearts, Bridge, Pinochle, 5 Card Draw/Stud, 7 Card Stud, Omaha, and of course Texas Hold ‘Em. I used to play penny poker with them for years. I started off play spades religiously online with my grandmother, we won a couple tourneys when I was 12 to 14. Then after watching the WSOP in 2001 or 2002 (I cant remember) I decided to start playing online. I first started playing on poker.com, from there I played under my dad’s account for about 2 years (16 to 18) and that was only off and on. While playing in high school online, I built my BR up to 250 from freerolls. I then sattyed into a sunday major on poker.com and managed to bink a ~1.9k cash. This immediately shocked my dad and he allowed me to keep it all if I would save it for college. Subsequently, in my senior year I was in need of a laptop, my Dad said I could get a laptop for 800 or less. There was one that was 1k that I wanted but I had to pay the rest. I got lucky and my neighbors who love poker and always invited my Dad and I to there weekly cash game, said hey we are going to have a 20 dollar buyin tourney at our house. So I bought in, my dad did too. There was 4 tables of 9, so 36 ppl at their house. I ended up winning that tourney for about ~300, paid for my laptop and never got to play serious again.

When I turned 18 I signed up for pokerstars and ftp. With no bankroll, the freerolls being freakishly huge, and no time on my hands b/c of college, I only played off and on. I never played to be serious, just for fun.

Well, last august I decided to pick it up again and now I am 21 and wanting to achieve my goals that I have set for poker. However, since August I have managed to run deep a few times increased my BR to keep me healthy at the micro stakes. I have read every damn book I could get my hands on (HOH, KE, Winning Poker tourneys 1 hand, Skalanksy’s stuff, Gus Hansen), met up with some poker friends conversed about hands, posted alot about hand advice at P5’s, and getting some help from the mid and high stakes players who think I can accomplish something.

As of right now, I play just Monday-Thursday from 530 CST til 12 CST. However, this is about to change b/c now I am co-oping(interning) for the semester and the semester is about to end. So, starting May 20th my poker playing schedule will come whenever I have free time, which is good b/c I could have time to stay up later, start earlier, and even play some on the weekends.

Also, This big reasons I chose to join this site (aside from PXF, PokerPwnage, Leggo) is:

1-I want to quit min-cashing in tourneys. I can get in about 7, maybe 8, MTTs a night. I can get ITM about half of those and what really chapes my ass is getting ITM and getting deep and then min-cashing. So, I want to become better at that.

2-You guys focus solely on MTT. I love MTTs, I love the strategy behind it, I am comfortable with MTT, and I feel like I play better in MTT.

3-BigDog asked me personally if I would join the site. I don’t know about you guys, but that is a great marketing tool. He took time out of his day to talk to a lowly micro player and said “Hey, if you are still looking for a training site try us out at……We would love to have you, and hopefully make you a better player”. So immediately I felt like I was getting help.

Anyways, I hope I can be constructive to the forum, I hope you guys can whip my ass into poker shape, and I hope I can represent how much you taught with some decent scores.

Great to be here and lets kick some ass! lol

Bryan, welcome to the site!  We appreciate such detailed feedback on why you joined.  Let me just say this to you.  WE LOVE MTTs.  That’s why we created this site.  So – we know exactly how you feel.

Definitely post in the forum – watching videos is huge and will make you better.  But the act of explaining your position on a forum will force you to think in ways that you don’t normally do.  It’s because our brains become so used to acting in one way that it really does take some forced thinking to learn new methods.

Anyways, we’re glad you joined and look forward to speaking to you more.

  That is so true. I call it one track thinking and I am trying to break from that. Also the other thing that I am trying to break myself is using my chips as a weapon and not a means to survive. When I get chips I try to horde them and not use them, so I am trying to break from that as well.

But so far, this is a great site.

Hi, I just joined on here. I play as 12mny2thehed on stars and tilt. Usually I play pot limit omaha hilo with good results, but want to expand into NLHE and PLO. I have no desire for sngs or cash games, I just enjoy tournaments. My goal  here is to expand beyond abc poker. Also, I have a rough time in the early stages, if I do get a big stack I manage to dwindle it away and am the king of the min cash.  My buy in range is lower than most, usually in the micro and low ranges with the odd venture into mid level.    I have a lot of issues with bet sizing and I never pay attention to other players styles. Any and all help is appreciated. I joined here because I am taking a shot, a guess that the instructors will be more attentive than the other site I had joined which will remain unnamed.

Hey guys,

My name is Don, lainie1072 on Stars and Tilt.

I am a teacher, coach, and part-time grad student.  I do not have a whole lot of time for hobbies, yet there is a window between February and August where I have a lot more time than the rest of the year.  Poker, basically, is my hobby.

Until late 2008, I played a decent volume of STT at the micro level with a decent ROI.  I just stopped playing in August ’08, really because the responsibilties of life caught up to me (starting a new teaching job, with 2 coaching jobs, bought a house, got married).  I took my roll of of all sites except for about 150.00.  In February, I played a home game, my first poker in 18 months, and the itch came back.  I delved back in full bore on the tables.  Bought all reputable poker books that I never read when I played STTs.

The next natural step was to enroll in an online training site.  However, I felt that I only wanted to learn MTT strategy, as cash games do not interest me and I feel pretty rounded in my STT game (besides, STT just don’t hold my interest anymore).  When I evaluated my needs for a site, this site seemed to match them perfectly.  I play maybe 12-18 MTT a week tops, not higher than 10.00 until my roll allows.  At the micro level, I have recently done really well, more than quadrupling my roll (a goal, as it would allow me to join a training site) since February, and I really want to turn the min cashes and near-final tables into final tables and Ws.  I think this site will do just that!

I look forward to discussing strategy with the regulars here and I believe that, in a few years, we will look back and remember when we were among the first members of a site that becomes one of the premier sites in MTT training.  I can already see that from watching only a few videos and reading a few posts.

Hey everybody, my name is Dallas, I am 29 years old and moved to Costa Rica a year ago.  I’ve been playing poker on and off for awhile but never actually dedicated myself to being a student of the game.  The game advanced as I was always busy doing other things which always left me behind the curve.  I have a lot of time on my hands now to study and play and am really excited about being here.

There has been a lot of stressful things going on here that has come along with moving here, I have been working on getting my residency since I’ve gotten here, come to find out I’ve actually been a citizen the whole time since I was 4 or 5 years old (long story), but for this reason I wasn’t able to get a bank account and make a deposit.  I checked Pokerstars back in Feb. I think and saw that I had like 8,000 FPP points on there from when I was playing before and cashed out my bankroll.  Since then I turned that into my bankroll now, minus my subscription here.

What I am looking for here is to get good at MTTs, I am a big fan of them, the different dynamics that goes along with them vs cash games.  Right now I only have money at Pokerstars which at times is frustrating because of the really long tournaments.  I think once I get my international bank account setup I want to move to a couple of other sites where the tournaments are not as long.  What sites would some of you suggest considering I can go to any?  Anyway, I look forward to getting to know everyone here.

Hey guys!

My name is Norson and I am from Brazil. I was formerly a computer game pro and moved to poker 4 years ago. I made a 20-buck deposit and played SnGs for almost 2 years going from low stakes to high stakes. Then 2 years  ago I moved to MTTs full time.

I play mostly on the Euro sites like ipoker, Ongame, Everest and MicroGaming but I also play on PokerStars, Full Tilt, Cake, Cereus and Merge.

My bigggest results have been:

-5th at a 2nd chance WCOOP of 2008;

-3th chop at the Sunday Brawl in 2009;

-7th at the High Roller of ECOOP 2009;

-2nd at Carbon Sunday Major;

-Top 2 at Everest MTT year leaderboard for 2009;

-some wins at 50r, 100r, etc;

-2 tripple crowns at pocketfives.

I was selected to be part of the local Full Tilt Team last year and played the WSOP ME because of that at which I busted at the end of day 2. This year I won a WSOP ME package at Chili Poker in a sattelite so hopefully I will get lucky this year :p

I am also a poker coach.

Hi! I just registered today. 🙂 Watching a bigdogpckt5s vid right now, he is playing a few NLHE tournies plus a HORSE. So I was wondering if you guys plan to make any PLO or PLO8 videos? (It's interesting to watch the limit O8 in the HORSE but because it's limit it's not really my game I think:)

First impressions: love the site. Will be hanging around 🙂

Hey where in Suffolk do you work?  I live in Mt. Sinai and work in Melville.

Also grew up in Queens – Astoria and Bayside when I got older.  Where were you?

Hello everyone. My name is Diego and I´m a brazilian 22 year old guy. I´m currently studying computer science and that´s all I basically have to do. On my free time I enjoy reading and playing guitar.

I´m very new at poker, and even newer in taking it seriously. So I just read Harrington on Holdem vol 1 and currently reading vol 2.

For now i´m just playing/struggling trough micro stakes, I don´t  feel like playing higher stakes without some knowledge, I don´t want to give you guys money, go get it somewhere else hahaha.

What I´m looking for is what everyone is looking for I guess, to improve my game. I really want to feel more confident with my playing so I can get to move up a little on stakes. It´s not really pleasant playing on micro stakes, I don´t like it at all.

I´m starting up on the forum, and hope to don´t stop.  I´m really excited to learn more and more, and communicate with other people with the same goal.

From one Diego to another, Welcome!

The best thing you can do to grow is watch the videos and become very active in the forum.  Asking, and answering, questions helps you stretch your mind very quickly.

Helllo everyone! My name is Matty and I go by MattyDaCobra on PokerStars and Full Tilt, Specious on Ultimate Bet, and ChosenLast on Bodog. I've been playing poker for 8 years now, 7 of them as my main source of income. I have mainly been a low-limit MTT grinder with a specialty in omaha and omaha h/l, though I've dabbled in cash games up to 30/60 and have recently been playing some higher stake tourneys to test myself (with mixed results, albeit over a small sample). I look forward to being an active member of the community and sharing my knowledge of low-stakes MTTs with others while learning as much as possible from everyone here.

ahhh…my last house was in Bablyon…right off of main street.  I used to work in NYC so it was a decent train line with the express.  My wife grew up here so we moved to Mt. Sinai 2 years ago. Yeah it's a bit more country than i'm used to but it is also nice to have property and no noisy neighbors.

Hi all, my name is Cannon, and i've been grinding mtts for years. Im CptnSpalding-ps xxsosickxx-ap xxmaniacxx/ub, i've had some success but am very sick of riding a short/med stack into the $ just to bust in 12th. I usually play micro/low BIs w/ the BR depleting, scoffing in the face of variance, shot at the higher but-ins. I'm a single father of 2 great sons, so poker gives me something to do after bedtime. I feel like i'm pretty decent in early stages of tournys, but after i double initially I tend to nit up and would like to work on my chip accumulation tactics. My game seems to be suited for satty's as i've had good success on stars, but when it comes to plying the 162 or whatever its obvious im just chum. Ok, well, im done rambling…..I like this site ALOT already and am looking forward to posting some sick brag posts soon!!
