Hey all,
Little bit about my poker history and how I ended up joining here…
I have been listening to TPE podcasts after a poker buddy of mine and I decided that we needed a lot of work in the tournament poker area. Only in the last 6 months have I started to take poker seriously and start learning more about the game I really love to play.
I have been playing mostly cash over the last 6 months at my local casino on the sunny Gold Coast in Australia. I have been making a considerable, secondary income from cash and feel confident enough in that side of my game at the moment. But I am out of my depth with tournaments of any size, I wish to increase my knowledge in this area.
Since listening to not all, but particularly the early stage TPE podcasts. I have already seen a huge improvement in my early stage tournament play. I am getting much, much deeper in 80 or 90% of tournaments.
I came to realise that I was playing a cash style game in a tournament very quickly, i.e. opening in the first blind level to 3x with suited connectors, simple things like that… Before I knew it I was through 100BB with crap.
Since tightening up my game extensively in the early stages of tournaments, I have been able to achieve much, much stronger results early and build large stacks to the point where I have 100BB. I am often wellllll above average and inside the top 10 or 20 at this stage. I fold my way to the money but I really feel I am missing a trick to playing “BIG STACK POKER” as I believe the pro’s call it.
My questions are:
– What is the next step when I run deep in these tournaments?
– What are some moves I should be trying?
– What should my range be in certain positions?
– Where can I learn more about this stage of a tournament on TPE?
Looking forward to the membership here, I have watched a few videos already, they are epic!
Cheers Luke

Since those are really specific questions that need in depth knowledge of your game im just gonna reccommend trolling aroudn the site.
A lot of the videos say 'deep run' on them so you can see which to take note of.
There are a lot of posts about stages and such.
There is much to be learned from the forums if you dare to delve into them.
I guess the “best” way would to find the exact knowledge you seek would be to start posting all of the hands you start to find yourself in, in those stages and open up dialogue…
hoe that helps and welcome

Yeah there are no simple answers to those questions other than to watch post and discuss as much as you can. I’d recommend short stack boot camp eory vids to assist you with later stages of tourneys.
For moves, just watch hand histories and sweats, then try things like turning the bottom of your opening range into your 3betting range in position, eg 3bet 89s.

Firstly, welcome aboard mate! There is a big contingent of Aussies here, so no shortage of people to contact & discuss the game.
Just like there is no substitute for playing hands to get experience, the best way I’ve found to figure out those tricky spots is to watch the pros in those spots again and again and see how they handle it.
There are always really interesting hands posted on this forum too.
Good luck!
