Hi everyone,

I’ve joined here and hoping I’ve done the right thing to improve my game. Any suggestions on what courses to study for live tournaments.

Thanks

Welcome! I (Andrew Brokos) have done a couple of videos where I review hands from live tournaments. Overall, though, I don’t think you need to worry so much about the live vs online distinction. Your focus really shouldn’t be on memorizing ways to play specific hands in specific situations but rather to understand the mathematics that underlie poker and the kinds of thought processes that will help you to find the right play regardless of the format you’re playing or the opponents you’re facing. Enjoy your journey!

Thank you Andrew,  That is the exact kind of stuff I need to improve on. I watch so many poker related show. WPT, HPT, WSOP and try to figure out why players make the moves they make and what “story” they are trying to tell. Of course some or just saying “Yes, I have the nuts” when they do.  I’ve learned a lot from that type of studying. However, I have to say that applying that at my local casino doesn’t work so well. I believe because most of the tourney players there aren’t thinking that advanced. They are just playing their cards.

The mathematics is what I struggle with. I’m not a good math person. I’m going to watch the Theory of Mathematics and hope that helps.  Will be watching some of your videos.

Thank you for taking time to offer your input.

You should watch all of Andrew’s theory videos (over and over again). They are pure gold!

Welcome!

FWIW, in the 1.5 months I’ve been a member I’ve noticed a MASSIVE difference when I sit down to play live at the local casino. It is like staring at one of those paintings where if you blur your eyes things start to pop out. I’m at the point now where I can tell in an orbit or two who is position aware or has a wider range or even who knows how to count BBs.

I’m just going through the University and, thankfully, living in Canada, I get to practice online. I play micro-stakes for now. I’m trying hard to single table so I can think more and practice things, review my hands, post a few hands, watch videos, listen to podcasts (including the Mental Game book and podcasts which isn’t affiliated with TPE but massively helpful to me).

The only miss-match I have been thinking about is that online I like to play normal” speed 10-12min levels compared to the live 15-20min levels at the casino which are even faster than turbos online. I find playing the online 45-90man turbo SnGs can be a pretty good proxy at once deep, stack and speed-wise, but still not as fast. I’m hoping to play a slightly higher buy-in tourney to experience 30min levels. I can’t even imagine what the WPT/WSOP speeds are like.

Please share your experience down the road!

I absolutely love reading threads like this, have a look at Cory Waaland as well he has owned the live community for a few years now.
