Hello,
I've just joined TPE and am very keen to get better at poker.
Very quick intro about myself, I am 29, working in finance with a mathematical background, but strangely enough I only played poker for the first time about 6months ago and I immediately got hooked. I read several of the old books (Harrington, Super System, Ace on the River), joined 2+2 and I talked about it with some of my friends who paid their university tuition by playing poker and I started playing cash on pokerstars : winning pretty fast in NL25 (but in hindsight over too small a sample and I was actually very lucky) and moving onto NL50 where I lost quite a few buy-ins at the beginning before being flat over my last 20k hands : in total I played about 80k hands and down about 40 buy-ins (ie down by the rake).
I started playing MTTs which I found really enjoyable and exciting when you go deep. I started with very low buy-ins mostly 5-10 and I went in-the-money or deep pretty often as the fields were very soft : my big breathrough came in September when I finished 3rd in the bigger 55 for about 10k that gave me a large bankroll.
I started playing bigger but experienced a very large volatility in my results. I am aware that my bankroll management was very aggressive but the issue is that i am not a pro and i stayed up until 4am in a 11usd tournament to win 300-500usd, that is not really possible for me to skip sleep for those amounts (now i play more turbos instead).
I have lost half of my bankroll a few different times offset by big gains here and there : huge vol due to the large fields I play and the very top heavy prize structure where anything below FT does not pay up that much.

Here are my stats on OPR where I have just opted in to profit/ROI statistics, and I have to acknowledge that my overall ROI is so much better in 5-40 tournaments (~50% on average) compared to the 60-215 area where I am at a loss despite having one FT in the big 162, but the sample size is much smaller in higher stakes too.
It's not only about the results, in low stakes I often get an easy double up early by a fish offering me his chips by stupid bluffs when he does not rep anything, or overvaluing a hand like TPTK deep. This rarely happens in higher buy-ins where there are many regs, few fish, and I often feel that when raised a lot of decision are close and I don't think my opponents do many more mistakes than i do, so am looking for every kind of edge possible.
My bankroll recently dropped as low as 4k after an incredible stretch of 200 MTTs without a final table, so I started to play lower and lower in the end, and a lot of 10-30 turbos where eventually i had some nice cashes over a week-end: 1st and 2nd in the 15usd 180 MTTSNG, 1st in a 8.8 turbo for 1850 and 2nd in a 16.5 turbo for 4750. However I don't want to blow my bankroll and will play with lower variance now : max one 109 per day and one sunday million per week (ideally paid by FPPs), no 162+ otherwise for now.
My goals are to get better, to crush the micro stakes and be a regular winning reg at the 55-200 level (but am ready to take it slow and wait for the bankroll to play more of those). I just turned platinumstar on pokerstars, would love getting supernova next year. I'm almost only playing online but I'm keen to try the WSOP or a EPT event next year.
I have a lot of things to learn still to get there, that's why I'm here. I'm going to start by watching the videos given here : …..oker-edge/
This post is a bit old so if you have any other suggestions of must sees I am keen to hear.
