Hi everyone..

I’m a 48 yr old Canadian. I used to play quite a bit back in the early 2000’s but took a break for quite a few years. I just recently started up again playing micro mtt’s. Last week I ran about 30 mtt’s and cashed 3 with 0 FT’s… I have noticed my play is out of date and need to relearn! I’m hoping this site can teach an old dog new tricks!.

I learned off Sklansky,Harrington,Hellmuth and a few other books. I have leaks in my game and to be honest I don’t understand the starting hand ranges of todays players. So thats why I am here and if anyone has ideas or video suggestions from the site feel free to help point me in the right direction.

I would recommend Andrew Brokos’ Getting off on the Right Foot to start with.

Welcome aboard.

I actually got a lot from KB and Marc Alioto’s recent series. Andrew Brokos can be intimidating and indeed incomprehensible to the beginner often. Watch the most recent series of KB’s and Marc and it should give you a good idea of how you should be thinking of hands.

Hey guys I’m new here too so I figured I’d try and keep the thread going. My sn is DreadMane and Im 32 and just started playing poker with money in April of this year! So im really fresh and really what I hoped to do by spending some money on this training site is avoid developing bad habits from the start, meet other players and learn how decent players play the game. Im hoping I can just skip the fish stage straight to winning player. Yea right.

Anyway I have some questions if anyone is interested in answering so Ill get right into it. My main concern is game selection first I think. What games should someone who has only been playing a couple months play in to learn and get in practice on the cheap? I play on ACR and Bovada right now ( maybe i should play somewhere else?).

So far i have tried some of the long, slow (not turbo) micro stakes tournaments on ACR. I get a lot of play for a small price doing this and I think this might be the best way to start practicing for me. But I work 9-5 so I can only do these on weekends. Also Ive cashed a couple times and it took like 9 hours and I got like $6. So maybe its not worth playing these and I should play a little bigger to make it worth my time. Maybe Im thinking about it all wrong I dunno.

I want to be able to practice during the week so Ive also been playing 3 tables SNG tournaments on Bovada. I won 1st or 2nd in like 4 of these so far and it actually boosted my roll a little and felt good. But I feel like my playstyle in these SNG games is very different and doesnt transfer well to the longer tournaments or at all to cash. I wonder if Im hurting myself by playing these even though I feel comfortable and win sometimes.

Finally there’s cash. I have my best results at 6 max cash, but it can get ugly so quick. If im only playing cash I might just punt my little roll all in one night then i cant play for a couple weeks. Maybe I should only play this to start though because its easier to track my performance? Anyway Ill stop now. What do you guys think I should play to start? Much Appreciated.

If you have the time, the better the structure the better, as you will get put in less push/fold spots early and will have more opportunities to play multi-street poker, which will help improve your game.  On ACR I find that day time is softer than night time, but i realize that is not practical for everyone.  The 2 hour late reg tourneys on there are cool for a happy medium.
