I have been opening bigger OOP, smaller in LP. Andrew Brokos is suggesting the opposite.
My experience is opening small from EP, gets a multi way pot OOP. So, I do exactly the opposite of what Andrew is suggesting. I understand the idea is to play smaller pots OOP. My preference is to play less multi way OOP.
Thoughts?

Hey Danny,
I don’t vary my raise size if I am RFI, unless I am blind vs blind in the SB and want to deny the BB the pot odds to call, and make me play a pot OOP.
If I 3bet, then I am certainly 3betting smaller IP than OOP. Again, I am am way happier playing a post-flop pot IP than OOP.
Having said that, I can see the merit in what you are saying re multi way pots oop.
Can’t for the life of me imagine why Andrew is arguing what you claim him to be arguing, although if he is I am sure there is a very good reason. I’d be interested to know the context in which this argument is made.

There’s no need to do this if your opponents are oblivious and going to call with the hands they’re going to call with regardless of price/position. Otherwise, the reason to raise smaller in EP is that the strength of your range compensates for the price you’re offering to callers (or raisers). In LP, your range is weaker and BB (and others, but mostly BB) get too good of a range to call.
Foucault,
Awesome video series on hand reading. Thank you for that. Also, I dig what you are saying, however being a rookie, I find it more difficult to play OOP, especially post-flopski. How do you feel about that being the reason for opening a little bigger in EP? Should I just grow a pair and get better playing OOP? Or do you think for amateurs its ok to make bet sizing slightly larger here? I think it also depends on stack sizes as well of course. And if they are going to call with what they call with, we would be building a bigger pot too. IDK, I value your opinion here for sure either way.

Of the choices you mention above, I vote for “grow a pair and get better playing OOP.” Obviously playing with position is better than playing out of position, but to become the best player you want to be you have to become effective on hands that require you to play OOP. My attitude is I won’t hide from uncomfortable situations and will view it as a learning experience. In the long run I think this makes a poker player less exploitive.

rppoker, that’s a great attitude. My current stand point now on this matter is this: I will raise bigger from EP if I think that players behind me are calling too much. Obviously, from EP our range should be MUCH stronger than from later positions, so in a case where I get AA from EP, I will open bigger if I think I can get a few more players to fold than I would if I opened smaller. I won’t open bigger because of the strength of my hand, I am only trying to reduce the number of players going to the flop.
