I know stars has larger fields but i can't even FT let alone win, i have taken a few weeks off work just for a break but to also put in some volume and see how much $$ i can make, after 80ish mtts 90% being on stars ive had a tonne of deep runs final 2 and 3 tables but i just can't seem to get there. After months of crushing the smaller field euro sites this has damaged my confidence either i have issues with my end game or im running bad or both. Any advice?

Variance in large mtt fields can be soul crushing. Be mentally strong is the best advice. Focus on improving your game because you enjoy poker and want to be the best and worry about the results later. Constantly be improving and surround yourself with people who are also working hard on there game.

Yeah I agree hawkeye , this was just a little whine 🙂 all I can do is do my best to get better and improve my game and make the best decisions in game. Oh and play less on stars maybe 😉

because you suck at poker surprised

nah seriously, the difference in variance between a 200 runner tourney and a 1k runner tourney is just massive.

another thing you might want to look into is if you get tired at the end of a long session – sometimes i found that with the tourneys on smaller sites, i could easily hold my concentration for the whole 3-4 hours it took, but usually in a big stars tourney, 4 hours in is like middle cash and you still have another 2-3 hours to go sometimes. so that could be your issue.

personally, i found that especially when i was playing weeknights, it would roll around to mignight and all my 888 tourneys were done, and i would have 1-2 stars ones left, and it would be still 30 runners left, and i would invariably punt off my stack just through tiredness or boredom or whatever.

so maybe only play stars tourneys when you know you have enough time and engergy to last the full distance.

your problem may be different, but that helped for me

you are not the only one;)  i know some guys who do pretty good on smaller sites but are in the red or just breakeven on stars, including myself 😉

i agree with hawkeye,  the fields are much larger than on the other sites and when u r used to reach final tables on a regular basis on the smaller sites (with mtts with about 200-300 players) its definetly a lil bit discouraging when you play stars mtts with a field sizes of 1000-2000 players and you just final table once a month or whatever.  look at the pros they make appr 10 fts in 500 tourneys on stars

i would recommand play on the site where you feel most comfortable, thats where you play your best poker.

lol benny wink

But you and bing bring up some good points especially about the amount of time you have to keep mentally focused this could definitely be a part of the issue. I think im am going to lower my volume on stars even though i love the juicy prizepools.

I also think the play is better on stars compared to the euro sites……more party and ipoker for me, i've played on ongame play is pretty bad there too, is bwin still ongame? i heard they merged with party not sure if they share their player pools and what is 888 like? i think i played their years ago and didn't like the software.

software is infinitely better on 888 now, i would say it is the third best in the industry now, behind stars (and tilt)

i really like 888, fields are soft, and tourneys get 200-400 runners which suits me.

their vip deals are horrible though, but this is overcome by site softness.

(damn, i really should try to get an 888 affiliate deal or something, i seem to be banging on about them all the time)

Patience and concentration are definitely key ingredients in successful play. I’ve struggled with the same question and have found it difficult to win on stars. I’ve run deep on occasions but have never made top 3 in the large field tourneys. I don’t believe it is as simple as being a good vs bad player, but rather the difference in making good vs bad decisions for each and every situation. It only takes one lapse in concentration or one stupid punt to cripple a decent stack and fall out of contention. I’ve kicked myself on many occasions where I’ve 3 barreled a wet flop OOP only to be destroyed, or some other “spew monkey” fanciness.
Spending 6-8 hrs on a large mtt is a privilege I can’t often afford. My greatest success comes from the smaller 27-45 player tourneys, maybe give those a shot to entrain your concentration and gain greater confidence.

Yeah cous i get spew monkey syndrome too and after i do it im like well i just ruined my chances of winning this tournament and compound the situation by dwelling on it, like you said patience and taking time with each decision is key.

I will be most likely be seing you on the 888 tables soon benny smile

it could also be due to the fact that on stars, the stacks are always a lot deeper late in the tourney, wheras on small sites, 30bb is a good stack.

so it could be due to your concentration with big stacks – i know i have the same thing. i tend to splash around too much when i have 60bb, fight for every pot, and soon enough someone wakes up with a monster and i am back down to 30bb, which before you know it is 20bb.

so i think the best thing to do is, even though it sounds nitty, is when you have 50bb, just go back to playing really solid poker for a while – if your bluff gets picked off, make sure your next hand is a value hand. that way you can try and stay solidly around the 50bb mark instead of spewing off chips and finding yourself in trouble

I feel your pain DroppinDimes… I'm currently going on 500 games where I'm breaking even on Stars. All that while getting some coaching and working on my game more than ever. I'm sure a break-through is around the corner.

As others have suggested mix in more 45, 90 and 180 man games to counter the large field variance and try some of the smaller sites where the play is likely softer and the fields are smaller.

Good Luck!
