ESTATIC to tell TPE Nation about my result in the CET Royal Riches Tournament.
I think The BIG DOG’s juju was rubbin off and continuing the January HAWT STREAK!!!
Caesars Entertainment held 3 tournaments called The Royal Riches Series and it was a freeroll with 100,000 guaranteed payouts to top 100….. and all entrants got tickets for each tourney they reg’d for for a drawing for 3 free seats to the WSOP Main Event. So even if you lost and won a seat it was worth the trip with free hotel, some play vouchers and a chance at a maine event seat.
There was one in September, November, and January. Unfortunately the only one i could make was the one held a few days ago. Jan 25-27.
So i knew i was going to play this and since this was my FIRST Large Field tourney i wanted to get ahead. So I joined TPE and relentelssly studied and worked on my game. [i know i know its a freeroll, some of you are thinking] I even contemplated buying a TPE patch and wearing it but then in the end, decided i didnt want to look like a douche with a patch and just went totally low profile status and plain geared. I figured people would have tried to play back at me too had with a patch and the power of being an unknown is immeasurable.
DAY 1 – The Structure was Shootout style [so winner of the table advanced to day 2] 1500 chips… 15 min levels and antes starting 25 at level 2. So it was super fast with 30bigs.
Phil Helmuh showed up all geared out and was knocked out round 1 Second Heat of day one. I confirmed it with 3 dealers.
I wish it had been a bounty tourney because i ended up doubling early with 2pair on the flop QJ, after a 5bet preflop raise i called. On the flop I went all in and he turned over bullets [aces] and i took the double up second or third hand of the round. I went on to knock out 6 of the 9 and win the table heads up in 1.5hrs.
DAY 2 – The structure was tournament play. So tables would be continually balanced and players moved. They kept EMPHASIZING how much it was like a ‘real tournament now’ but anyone who could read the sheet could realize that it was MUCH faster it was than day one.
5000 chips – 20 min levels.. 100/200 lvl 1, then 200/400 with 100 ante level 2………. and so on
so basically we with 25 bigs.
I started near the back on table 26….. to make a long story short i was moved 9 times… so everytime i was starting to develop solid reads on guys they would pluck me off…. Finally i got moved into table 3 and was now the shorty at the table sandwiched in position 4 with the two biggest stacks to my immediate left and right. Fortunate enough for me the LAG was to my right… and he was talkin his hands and thought process aloud so i was LOVIN IT!
A few hands later i was all in on KQs in the BB and the SB to my right called my shove and was playing with chips and face saying, ‘i hate to double you up… oh what the hell its poker i call”
Eventually him and i kep gettin moved and play at two other tables together and every time i get seated to his right 🙁
Until its folded around me and I raise 3x.. so 3k in the CO with K 10 …. he calls.. heads up……the flop is K 5 10 …. i raise just shy of 1/2 pot so 5.5k and he reraises to 9k……. i hollywood…. and check my cards…. then look at him and say…. ‘you dont have trip kings do you?????’ He smiles and doesnt say anything, which is suprising cuz hes super verbal… then i lean forward and STUFFY BAKER my remaining 15k into the middle and he waits one second and says ‘ i Dont want to double you up again!’ but then snap calls and he turns over a heart draw Q high….. and on the Turn i bink K to complete my boat and shake his hand as he exits…he was entertaining to play with and made it fun
I get moved a few more times until we are playing hand for hand on the remaining 2 tables… its bubble time baby….
Almost every hand thereafter; someone is standing up and walking the tourney shame trail to the door. Finally im down to 9 bigs and realize with the 500 antes my M is less than 2 at my 7 player table…. I look down and see Q J in the hijack after 3 limpers… so i raise to 3x which is 12k… half my stack. MP calls and the flop is .. J 7 9…. so im lookin recent with top pair and draw posssibilities… and he has only about 8k behind…. so we are both committed and i know im probably ahead so i bet to put him all in…. he calls then the turn was trash 2 …. and the river was 8 …. he turns over K 3.. and i am crippled….. So with 6k i just go all in blind next hand and lose with 10 7.
So i stand up and go to the podium ask the directors. So where did i place? 13th they say…. So i turn to the reamining tables and say loudly, ‘”13th huh….. at least im not 11th!”
and everyone chuckles pretty hard…
I was On a high with my first large field tourney experience. Now granted they were mostly novices and such since it was a freeroll but none the less my work paid off.
If i can impart any advice to anyone i say make small goals for youself in daily/weekly/monthly/yearly training and smaller goals when you get to the tourney..
mine were, in order:
Day 1 A goal – beat all these 9 guys to win my table to make day 2
Day 2 A goal – beat out 80 of the remaining 180 to cash, but play to win along the way by picking up chips to set yourself up later on
Day 2 B goal – get to the next pay bump top 50
Day 2 C goal – final table this mother ffer…..
I almost hit them all….
but i want to thank everyone at TPE, including the members because it seems we are the driving force behind the site and KillingBird and Ronfezbuddy realize this…. so thanks to all for being a community and helping eachother by talking hands/encouraging/pushing others with your involvement…
And i just wanna say, since we are the driving force beind what goes on here PLEASE SPEAK UP FOR WHAT YOU WANT ON THE SITE BECAUSE IT SEEMS WITH ENOUGH VOICES WE CAN GET IT!!!!
So this post is long enough… But i just wanted everyone to realize what can be accomplished if you work your ass off and use the tools you have at your diaposal as best you can, for the level you’re at.
THANKS TPE NATION!!!!

thanks all!
i just hope my write up can inspire others to improve so our community betters itself
…………. and as a follow up.. i just want to say that my ski.ls that i helped hone partially from TPE [am still honing] were of great use in a grinder 1-2 cash game at the palms…. those regs dont respect you until youre a few hours deep and are holding some of theirs in your stack….
OH and Congrats on anothre big run at the Sunday Millions Big DAWG.. i would have railed but i had a tourney to play

Congratulations! Glad to hear you had such a fun, profitable, and exciting experience.
Regarding goal-setting, I recommend focusing on things that you can control: “Play each hand to the best of my ability.” “Be conscious of bet sizes and what they indicate.” “Practice hand reading whenever I'm not involved in the pot.” Stuff like that.
Although I think it's good to stay focused on playing well in the short term and not get distracted by dreams of winning the whole tournament when there are hundreds of runners left, “beat all these nine guys” is not something you can control and it's not clear to me how having a goal like this would motivate any particular action or behavior on your part.
Hope that's not too preachy, I really did open this thread just to say congratulations!

Your absoutely right Andrew….. shout out to your website and Podcast btw …..poker.net/
That was my fault for not clarifying; the goals i listed were my macro goals for each day or portion of the tourney…..
Confirming what you said… i was focused to take advantage of every moment of information i could glean…I mean thats what i was there for… to test my skills in a live game where information ABOUNDS!! One of my biggest goals that i ommited in my original post was to put into practice some of the things i had been working on… and after day one i realized what io was doing well and what i was neglecting so I had a focal points day two….
To elaborate on your points i was consumed by what they were doing… and ranging every card dealt and trying to figure out why is this guy’s motivation, whos clearly here for fun, for reraising this flop…. why would he min 3bet in mp2… etc……I quickly noticed not many people were even looking at the other players when they cards were distributed nor on the flop, turn or river….
I was entirely exhaused when i was done because in EVERY hand i was watching/scrutinizing everyone involved. This ended up helping me a great deal because I was moved probably the most [9 times], because i started on the last table.. I had already seen most everyone play when it got down to the remaining 4 tables so i had some experience with most everyone…
In the end the result was a bonus as the true reward was the application of my knowledge and seeing how much info it gave me against these villians….
I think the pursuit of improvement and the reward of allowing yourself satisfaction in it, while still realizing what you need to work on, will keep me motivated long term. Besides, its those dauntingly challenging endeavors at the onset that seem the most rewarding when you accomplish them. And I think that anyone who has studied poker even on an intermediate level can agree, the more you learn the more you realize there are FAR more ways, than you had previously realized, to manipulate your opponent or them to manipulate you….. So metagame [which is on all accounts all mental] becomes the true pursuit…..
