The first step: Keep a positive mindset and don't get enraged

Hey guys,

Just wanted to say to everyone that has bad beats, has tough breaks, or has downswings to keep your head up. Don’t ponder on your eliminations, don’t dwell on your bad beats, and stay positive.

I have been practicing this for years. I have been learning to let shit go. However, everyone once in awhile I will lose my cool. I lost my cool last night, and I just think it was a culmination of everything that happened in the day. Slow day at work, this football simulation game I play (I can introduce you guys to it if you are interested), and then my MTT session last night.

Now my mindset is I can play better than 4/5s of these donks that I play in the micro MTTs. However, to win one of these things, to get deep in those donkaments, you have to get lucky. So, when you make the correct move and you get lucked out. It can be disheartening, frustrating, and disappointing especially when you are trying to increase your BR and skill level.

Now I can get on here and complain/bitch of how I lost in the SCOOP last night with AA, how my flopped straight got mashed by a turned full house, or how my top set got destroyed by runner runner for a flush. Quite frankely though, if you are playing micro, if you are playing poker period low stakes or high you are going to have to deal with some bullshit before you get to better.

So, with this post I am trying to help some of us members who have play the micros to keep your head up. I would say its better at these stakes or those stakes but honestly I do not know. Just remember there is always another day, another tourney, and another hand that could make you.

(Had to sleep on a horrible night of playing last night — I feel a little better, just wanted to release my thoughts)

dont fret man..i like you have the same problem..usually i get enraged after losing one tourney and it usually costs me theothers i do..but that shouldn’t be the case.

dont worry we’ll all have our winnings days especially if we keep honing our skills and adjusting our play, eventually the cards and lady luck will come our way

yes i know this feeling.  i been working on my tilt management lately.  i’ve read the poker mindset and its helped a lot.  I keep the book on my desk so I can see it and look at it when that donk hits his 2 or 3 outer on the river, I try to think about the decisions and not the outcome.  As you guys know i was just whining a few nights ago.  anyway gl guys and just try to make the best decision on every hand thats all that matters.

Yeah I did not have the best of nights. I need to choose better tourneys or play less and focus on those more or something. In my mind I try to put in enough volume each night to where if I take a bad beat, I am like oh well that happens, atleast I got this other tourney I am in.

I am trying, just have to keep plugging away here

yea bbird..keep at it

honestly the biggest problem i find is the volume. All these pros play like 20-30 tournaments a day and they only have to get to a FT once to get a big score or break even for the night. I usually do like 3-4 a night so i have a lot of losing nights.

its tough for us given its not what we do for a living. I try playing at work but its tough to concentrate and I can only do 1 tournament at a time so its not that effective.

just gotta keep at it and not get discouraged but then again when you are playing 5-6 tournaments a day, losing one to a bad beat is prolly more powerful in terms of going on tilt than playing 20 a day because you dont have many other tournaments to fall back on and say ‘oh well i stilll have this one going’

Nice article Ron….It helps, just this is an extrememly bad week for me….Played 8 tonight did not cash 1. I dunno whether or not to keep trying or take a break…but hell I only play a small amount, you really cant break from something that you hardly get to do.

I dunno what is best for downswings. I just don’t like the feeling. I don’t mind the bad beats and shit but I just don’t like keep trying and failing.

Ugh! Anyways, good luck guys! Take care!
