The other day I requested a cash out (bank wire) from a US-facing online site. My request was later cancelled, and customer service suggested alternate methods of payment.  Why?  They informed me they searched me after my request and noticed that I was a “known poker player,” which meant that banks are more likely to recognize it as a “poker transaction” and decline my money to avoid dealing with the hassle of online poker funds. So to be a successful poker player nowadays, one needs to be both: a) good at poker; and b) good at pretending to not play poker? embarassed

Anybody else run into this sort of thing of late?

the couple of bovada checks I deposited, I did so on my lunch break in a buttoned shirt and dress pants. they were between $500 and $1500 each I think when I did it, and my account up to that point was like…barely above $100 usually on average. Paycheck would come in, bills would wipe it out, back to zero. So yeah, I was very worried I'd trigger some anti money laundering software bugs (id consider it a bug if someone not laundering money was flagged). I think the first time I did it, I hadn't had steady paychecks from work in a couple of months as I was getting direct deposits into another bank account from an intertops affiliate or something. The bank was kind of weird about the amount of money, and the fact that it was a Canadian check, but not the source. Truthfully, none of them actually care, even if they pretend to. They make money on having your money in the bank. They just want to think it's clean.  When I deposited my one carbon check, I felt like a criminal. I looked how I normally dress, in shitty jean cutoffs and a punk band's tshirt. they gave me eyes over the strange looking few hundo check I was giving them, but it slid through. IIRC, it actually took like 3 weeks to process. netspend (an online bank that has those international transaction approved debit cards with fees everywhere) gave me shit about putting more than $200 on it, when I needed like $500 to put on bovada,  and asking them questions about using paypal to deposit (it's a fucking option on their site, goes nowhere, dead links). basically, i offer no advice and just want to…not complain, but kinda commiserate. lol.

if the bank won't help, find another bank. they want your money. Dress nicely. Make small talk. I've hashed this out and decided ultimately on hiding in plain sight. I say like “hey so I don't do these jobs very often, but last time this or this happened…etc” As far as my bank is concerned, those checks were for contract database management work. I like to talk about myself, as do most people, so I go off about my econ degree and only finding contracting temp work like that. I don't know if it helps, nor do I have confirmation it does anything, but I feel better about it and don't really get problems. It's been a long time since I've done it (reverse brag), but yah. hustle the bank with gto cashout strategy.

Have you considered using the ATM to deposit the check?

wow, never heard this one!  I've probably deposited a dozen checks from various US facing sites without issue.  The very first time I remember they asked me what the check was for and I said it was from some “independent worK' that I do. Im not even sure what that means but it sounded fancy!

I have found that the ATM (nor scanning them with my cell phone app) works.  I always have to go inside the bank to deposit them.

The exact same thing happened to me after my Bovada win and it's been hell to deal with. Guess if I was a known sports bettor, I'd be all good for a bank wire.

Canadian checks dont work in US ATMs. I've always been able to get checks cashed at the drive through though.

Chris if you're talking Bovada, you can probably go to Canada and get a Bodog account with the same player pool. Also, it might be easier to cash the Canadian checks in Canada since you spend so much time there. I really need to move.

it sounds like he's having trouble with the poker site, not the U.S. banks. that is weird

not quite. mostly they claim the banks themselves wont take this kind of money.

for some reason i thought bovada wasnt allowing canadians, but maybe the distinction with BoDog is relevant? would definitely be easier to play & cash out from there

Are they technically different skins of the same site? They probably want to segregate the front-end experience because it makes it easier for their accounting. It could also be a branding play. I think I've seen a lot of bodog ads during CFL games.

Bodog is only available in Canada. Bovada is only available in the US.

They have the exact same player pools and they both issue Canadian checks.

I've not heard of this one before.

Did you post this in the 2+2 bovada payout thread? Would be curious to hear what people say. I peruse that forum with some regularity, and have not read anything like that.

Very odd that Bovada is going out of their way to avoid a wire transfer. I assume this is the method you usually use? And that you've had no problems?

Their spin about you being a pro is bs as far as you're concerned, imo. Obviously the bank doesn't really care about your profession.

They're just trying to avoid trouble on their end and I wonder why that is. Maybe they don't like doing multiple transfers from the same processor to the same account.

How'd this end up for you Darvin?

havent posted on 2+2, not really an avid poster on there.

spoke with bank today, as they actually revoked the payment from my account. since its a canadian check, they dont allow it to be processed in an ATM deposit/edeposit, or with partner banks w/in their network. so far, this is the “only” hiccup.

the part about the bank wire (bs) is valid to me. im definitely leaning toward wires in the future, especially for bigger amounts. hopefully this wont continue to be a problem.

ill keep you guys informed about this in the future. if bovada is to be a viable site for my income in the future, occurences like this are no small scare. if anybody else has issues (or even lack of issues), i’d like to hear about it here too.

For sure man. I haven't tried wires with Bodog post BF, but haven't had any problems with checks. I do always deposit them with the tellar. I've never had any issues depositing in person, most people are usually friendly and nice. Worst case scenario is a long clearing time in my experience.

Haven't tried bank wire but Bovada check payouts are pretty damn fast. The only issue I've had depositing is my bank insists on paying me the Canadian value of the checks even though the checks clearly state 'US Dollars'. I have to call customer service and explain that when the checks clear for the US equivalent that they accurately adjust my balance.

When i get my checks from Bovada they always have to be deposited inside with the tellers because they are Canadian. My bank sends them through the collections process to get the money. Takes exactly a month from the day I deposit it. And i have never had them try to give me the Canadian value.
