Hey guys, joined back up after taking a good amount of time off. Last year I joined, deposited $50 and cashed out a couple months later for $1500ish.

I got the itch again, and am a lot more serious about the game. I have been watching only theory videos at the moment.

My issue is;

I joined up to Bovada last Monday for $50. Over the past week I grinded out $5 super turbo’s, $8 triple up turbo’s, and a few hyper turbos in the $3-5 range. I played a few MTT’s and only cashed in 2. $2 for $12.50 and the $7 1k GTD for $60. I was up to $450 on Friday.

Since then I just cannot catch a break. I went from cashing in 65% of my sit n go’s to being lucky if I cash in 1 out of 4. Should I decrease my stakes, increase them, or find a different type of game? I went from playing the best I ever have to just getting dominated. I know variance is a huge factor, but it just seems like I went from playing a A game to a C- game.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

I personally do not give up on my stakes if I just had a bad run. I played multiple tournaments yesterday night for a total buyin of around $400. The plan was to at least double up. However, the cards didnt really go my way. I was butchered by rivers, someone flopped a set on my top tops. Big stacks on my right, left etc. Everything went wrong in a nutshell.

However, I had a good score 5-6 days ago. Came first at a 10k guaranteed and cashed in 2300.

For me, as long as I play good poker, I will be rewarded. If I am comfortable with my buyins, I will keep playing at the same stakes. My buyin range is 50-150 for a tournament except for satellites.

I do this because I have a regular job and I am not constantly playing poker. The only thing I do to prevent varience from robbing me is that I switch to satellites and spend maybe for a total of 50 a night.

In your case though, as long as you are comfortable with your game and your budget, the buyins you are playing should be fine depending on your 450 bankroll. Dont forget, time is at least as important as money.

Agreed with the above.  Do not worry about the results.  However, take some time to review your session hands and see if you were making any mistakes. if you played well, that is all you can do!  Variance gonna variance.

Thank for the advice guys. I spent some time going over some HH last night, and I started the TPE university. I am going to spend a few days studying my game and watching videos.

I noticed that I was chasing my losses in the last few SnG tourneys, shoving with hands I shouldnt and playing out of position trying to force cards, which I never do.

I dont know where you play, but just a couple of hints. Im playing mainly on PartyPoker network in NJ. I started out as a very aggressive player. But realized those things that you are doing(playing out of position with marginal hands, opening marginal hands, shoving or bluffing in unnecessary spots) just dont work because there are a lot of regs and they just are very nitty. Most often than not, you will bleed chips.

So I changed my style to be more solid and always proceeding with caution even with premium hands. Got to understand that early stages of tournaments are not to stack up on someone and take the lead in the tournament. I finally got to understand that aggression should be used sparingly until the bubble.

I saw a lot of success with that. In a nutshell, I am playing the players first, position second, and cards the last.

TPE videos will help you a lot. Wish you the best of luck…

Thanks Killingbird and NeverAA.

I took some time and did some hand reviews. I also watched a good amount of videos, especially on the DONS since I do the triple up turbos on Bovada. I crushed the two tourneys I played last night, shipped a $10 3 table SnG and a triple up turbo.

Have a good wknd and gl at the tables
