I've been on a really bad downswing lately, and it seems like I've been experiencing negative (unfavorable for me) variance forever.
I read in a couple articles that even pros are only final tabling like 3% of the time. I believe there's some truth to this, but are the pros really not cashing deep 97 out of 100 times?
I feel if I had some concrete perspective about these percentages I'd definitely have deeper perspective about my own losses in MTTs.

The average ITM % is generally 14-17%. Look up some of the well know mtters on officialpokerrankings.com and you’ll find this to be correct.
Of the percentage they do cash not all are going to be FT visits. I don’t know if 3% is an average Mtt ft appearance for a good player, I actually think this might be a little high. Obviously depends on buyin, size and average players knowledge in the field.
15% cashing rate is your target but dont get lost in this result because ive seen some low cashing rates on some of the best MTT players in the history of the game this is because top pros never lose site of the goal and that is top 3 results at worst and winning as there ultimate goal and they never let cashing a tourney stand in the way of proper play and winning.
That 3% rate is going to depend a lot on the size of the tournaments you're talking about. If you're talking final table in a field of 500, the final table is 1.8% of the entrants, so a pro making 3% is beating the random distribution by a ratio of 5:3.
On the other hand, the final table in a field of 2000 is 0.45% of entrants, so a pro making 3% of finals in fields like that is beating the odds by nearly seven times. That would be pretty good.

this, iirc thebattler33 was cashing in like 8% of tourneys but winning tourneys outright at a higher rate than everyone else. i know some people who play live, cash 20%+ but never win and still make a living playing tournaments. it all varies.
