The past 7 days have been somewhat brutal. I thought I had seen a lot of what variance had to offer, especially the bad stuff, but no. I appreciate this will always be part of the game and have been working hard on my mental game to help me deal with it so that I don’t compound the issue by tilting off stacks as well, or busting keyboards and mice.

I am writing this post for 2 reasons i) to help myself by getting it off my mind, ii) to help others who may be now or at some point hence suffer from similar.

Variance is many faceted but for this post I am just going to focus on the “OMG really, that just happened” and the “OMFG did that really just happen again” type hands. Specifically in the past 7 days I have flopped or turned top set (99+) 14 times and lost 13 of the hands nearly all of them for massive / all-in pots, every-time I lost to a flush or a str8 on the river and 7 of them were to runner runner, none of them was set over set. i know these stats specifically as after it happened 3 times in one hour in one session I started to keep count.  A bunch of the fairly everyday sucks, bad beats and coolers on top of this has made the past week very tough.

I am playing full-time now so I hope that i will get through this spell fairly soon (in terms of days rather than games). But, I could imagine that for someone who only plays a few sessions per month, say 50-80 MTTs, if they hit a run like this it could be months before they come out of it and that could be very detrimental. All I will say is that if you are experiencing something similar know that you are not alone, keep playing the best you can you will still get some results despite the bad run and they are all the sweeter.

Just thought that I would update this. Played a session yesterday and honestly nearly quit it after the first hour, as yes you guessed it, flopped a set 3 times and lost all 3 hands, 2 causing tournament bust outs. This thing will flopping strong sets and losing the hands went from irritating, to maddening, to hysterically funny, to this is going to put me in a padded cell.

Anyway, I’m not a quitter, instead i took an extended break and cleared my head and back to it. The next couple of hours didn’t go much better, with bad beats, coolers, and big bluffs not getting through (although repping the hand the villain is holding generally doesn’t end too wellcry). I took another break to have diner with my misses, and even she was saying take the rest of the evening off. But I stubbornly got back to the grind, however I decided I needed to lighten the mode so I grabbed a stubby beer, stuck on some tunes and got down to it, 5hrs later I was deep ITM in 3 MTTs taking a 2nd, 19th, and 17th which got my whole week out of the hole.

Moral of the story, no matter how tough and ridiculous it seems to be getting, keep battling on and keep playing the best you can and you will come through it.

“But it ain’t how hard you hit; its about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward; that’s how winning is done!”
