I was a huge believer in chip Utility and the Whole Arnold Synder aka Thomas Hoover…..books Poker Tournament Formula 1 and 2..  I treated like the bible reading and rereading it .. probably 10 times in total.. for about 14 months …….I was obsessed with building a big Stack and finding myself building huge stacks only to donk it off..”problems changing gears i suppose” . Anyone have any opinions on these LAG styles or thoughts on the books…? Chip Utility Chip Utility.. I still kinda do feel like Chip Utility is the main factor in winning Tourneys.. Like I said I lived thes books for along time.. Hell I even made affirmations after alot fo Synders sayings… and beliefs… I am a major horder when it comes to my thoughts on the game… I just have to wriite down anything new.. prolly why i have about 20 notebooks laying around with poker thoughts in them…..

If you have read it have you implemented over a period of time as we all know tourmanents is very much a Quantity game.. Ask Shaun Deeb aka Tedsfishfry…

Just curious on anyones thoughts because now seeing Bigdogs videos … and really soaking in what he is teaching i am getting back to Nitty Tight early.. Which is fine since the first tourney i played the big dog way i took 2nd out of 662.

Just kinda in a weird Mind Funk about the whole thing because when i started I was Super TIght back in 2006. Sucked in the middle stages not really understanding 3betting and stack size awareness for about 3 months… Than I read Everyhand Revealed by Gus Hansen and The Poker Tournament Formula books and I Thought for sure one of the biggest TRUTHS in those books was that CARDS ARE REALLY ONE OF THE WORST Weapons we possess as players…  In both books both authors harp on cards being pretty much the 5th,6th, or not a factor at all….

Glad I am back on track here though thinking more about my cards … I was pretty crazy for a year or so… Like i said i thought these books were the bible..LOL..

Opinions welcomed as I am not easily offended..

Forgot to mention the WHOLE Annette Oberstad 180man she took down without looking at her cards tourney a few years back.. Again making me believe cards really have little value in MTTs…

Thanks all

I have the first Arnold Snyder book and to be honest, I don't like it. It doesn't suit my game – I am a firm believer of playing tight early on and given the move towards loser play early on, it is reassuring to hear the bigdog advocating a nitty style early on.

I picked up his books sometime back and actualy enjoyed reading them alot.

I often find myself going back to review these books along with the Harrington series the most out of everything I have ever read. It seems as my game develops so does my understanding of material presented in both of these books.

My play has morphed in the years from Weak/Tight , to Tight/Aggressive, to Loose/Aggressive, then back to a Tight/Aggressive style.

The thing that is different is I now UNDERSTAND how to play each style. I believe his ideas in fast structure MTT's are really valid; however in most games today this idea seems failry exploitable by smart MTT players. Thats the main problem with his entire strategy taken as a whole (and not pieced out).

Example of taking a piece out:

I have played many MTT's with a little cutout piece of paper that covered my hole cards just as Synder suggests in his book. This single exercise helped me understand what I was capable of more than anything else in poker I have ever tried. If you have never tried it , I suggest doing it just once to see how it goes. Does this stand alone as a strategy, of course not. Is it critical to be able to play this way as part of his strategy, of course it is.

Can this be exploited, I would think so ….

Will using his strategy make you a complete poker player? I would have to so I don't think so….

but to me there is a large benefit of just knowing what this strategy is…

Peace

His style of play in the book was based on the tournament structure being fast.  He says not to use it in slow tournaments.  I thought it was a good book for small buy in fast structure tournaments.  I have used it at the HorseShoe Casino out here and done very well with it, you just have to make adjustments during the tournament like in any tournament.

Love this book and had my first MTT succes after reading it.

I believe is an eyes opener for everyone starting in the MTT world as it teaches in an easy way not to rely only on the cards, btw i bought his first book on blackjack years ago and the way he explains things is awesome.

For the live fast tournaments we have nowadays is a must read imo.

I do believe the slower online blind structures makes the tight-early play from the TPE instructors the wright play tho.

yeah, i think it is good for those fast moving structures that you will see at daily live tourneys in AC, Vegas, etc but might not be suited to slower moving, better structured tourneys.

I have read and used his methods for sometime with success, however the game today may have passed his style of play by.  With all the floating in the game today his total aggression post flop just builds a big pot that you may have little chance of winning at showdown.  Also first in raising seems to get very little respect and is countered with 3 and 4 bets much more than when the book was published.  All this said it still has a place in fast pace tournaments as part of a balanced strategy.  On his website he has a great Excel calcualtor that allows you to determine what speed of tournament you are playing, good for online and live.  Not sure if links are allowed so just google “arnold snyder poker” and it should be the first line, the calculator link is on the left nav bar.

Book one is geared for fast tourn. & two is for slower/deeper events. There is some great advice in both but just like any other resource you incorporate the things that work well with your style and beliefs and pass on the stuff that doesn't.

The thing I learned most from these books is the importance of understanding each tournament's structure and how to adjust your strategy accordingly.

I have read both of these books with rapt fascination.  I must say that it was extremely helpful on those fast tourneys.  I have not really played in a “slow” tourney so I am excited to actually read book 2 and see how that fits into my overall game.  I am quite nitty starting off so it was a real stretch for me to be super aggressive early on.

That being said, I do use mathboy's PTF spreadsheet to gauge the speed of a tournament.  I have found this helps me in knowing when (by the clock) I need to become a bit more loose.
