So…running a mac and want to keep using it…cost me enough. I'm about to by Paralles so i can run SnG wizard and pokestve and occasionally mash on party poker…question is;
What version of windows do I buy? Recently released Windows 8? Is Anyone else here using Windows 8 with their poker apps? Or do go safe and run a previous version of windows? If so, which one? Be advised thay my windows knowledge still only extends to Windows XP (thanks to day job)
Upswing potential is huge

definitely get at least W7, it is really good.
havent tried W8 yet, but will prolly take the plunge over the christmas break. mate has it and he says it looks pretty but he spends most of his time in the “desktop” app anyway, which is pretty much the same as W7

Def don't go anywhere beyond W7. 8 is a nightmare (been using it at work since august) especially compare to using a Mac.
Also, been running Virtualbox on my Mac for poker-purposes since 3 years, and running XP in it for performance reasons. Same should apply for Parallells. Virtualbox is not as slick as Parallells but almost as fast and a fair bit cheaper (free) and it is running okay on Mountain Lion.

Well I work in IT and I love win8. It’s hell faster, lots of improvements like file copying, the new task manager etc and the new start screen is great for grouping programs (or Apps as they call them now.)
I must say that at first look and try, it’s seems really annoying without the start button and with the new start screen. Once you know the way to use it though it’s hell good. Def google how to use the start screen and the diff tricks and shortcuts it does, plus it handles my 4 monitors way better as well (sick brag:)
I will guarantee you will hate the new interface initially so read up on how to use it 🙂
BTW: right click in the bottom left corner where the start button used to be and you’ll get a menu with control panel etc.
If runs well with all my poker clients and pt4 and I run them all as administrator just in case. The only prob I’ve had is with tournament shark where I have to mess around a bit to get it work (they are fixing this in Jan.)

In regards to mac software, Virtualbox is very good as Melanoc said. I wouldn’t go past Win7 though in a virtual environment (same for parallels.)
If you really want a true and fast windows experience on the Mac without overlaying virtual machines, use bootcamp which comes with the Apple OS. You choose either Windows or Mac when booting and each OS is completely independent. When booting into Windows, it’s not virtual and is effectively the same as using a standard Windows machine which makes it very fast and you can install all your Windows versions of poker software.
Buying windows is a bugger as it does cost a bit. This is where windows 8 is good as its way cheaper, but is prob not compatible with bootcamp or Virtualbox/parallels yet. You should be able to pick up an OEM win 7 at most places for a reasonable cost but the full retail boxed version costs a fortune. OEM is the same but is only supposed to be sold with a new pc or hardware etc (most smaller pc shops just sell it anyway for about $100 or maybe less at a legit eBay store.) I’ve never had to buy Window coz i get it free from work so you might want to shop around. I’ll leave the torrent subject alone in this post;)

Okay, what do I like in W8, hmm… Desktop app looks like W7. That's about it. (call me a luddite) No really, the constant context switches between “metro” (the ugly tile interface) and W7 style legacy apps drives me crazy. Also there are numerous inconsitencies: Control panel is split in two… Shut down is hidden behind [Win]+C/Settings or [Alt]+F4 in desktop. “Metro” is all white space with very low information density — migraine inducing. Oh, [Ctrl]+X brings up that right-click menu… (Pls, don't wanna start a flame war, this is just my experience, other ppl at work are totally in love with W8.)
But yes, you are right. W8 is speedier than W7 and hardware support is awesome out of the box, so maybe it runs quicker in a virtual environment…
