Has anyone read this? I am looking for an unbiased review. It is really hard to find unbiased reviews. I have a few of his books already. Is this book worth getting? Because its not super cheep..I do play 1/2 cash +working to move up. I did not buy pokers 1%, I didn't get the impression it was that useful from the reviews I read..how about this new one?

Ok, well crickets on that request. So I just ordered the book and read it so I'll review it myself.

This is a book, despite the title, that it probably a “step-up” book for the beginnning cash game guy. Luckily, that is me, as I have been playing tournaments almost exclusively. I Have read a few of Ed Millers other books and this one is definitely the best written, in terms of organization, typos, language, etc. So it's a very easy read, it reads like a book. It deals mostly in generalities not technicalities and math, and an overall approach to low limit cash games. I think any semi-advanced cash game player would find it pretty mundane, but as someone very new to the live cash game world I found it very helpful and an enjoyable read. Waaay too pricey at over $40 (it's just a book, jeez) but I should get that value back at my local card room-

I can recommend it. I gave Ed some feedback on a draft, though it was already very good at that point so I'm not saying that in an attempt to take credit, just to clarify that I haven't read the final version. I think Ed's great strength as a writer/teacher is the ability to boil very complicated stuff down to rules and concepts that beginners can use, and this book really highlights that skill.

Something to keep in mind, although completely off topic to the post, is that 40$ really isn't that much money for a 1/2 grinder. While it seems excessive for a book, you are often going to find yourself in a river situation that is = or > the cost of said book. If this book helps you make the correct profit decision in that spot even once, then it has essentially paid for itself.

That was a concept I struggled with when I was hiring a private coach. It was really hard to pay someone 100$/hr to review a HH and go over a concept with me. However, the end gain from that session has made me substantially more than the 100$/hr it cost me. Most books are the same.

Oh, I understand that the book will earn back its $40 no problem. It's kind of a trait of poker books, that they are expensive, probably because they don't sell huge numbers but offer a lot of financially valuable information. Are books about the stock market unusually more expensive? Real estate? How about a book about how to fix my car, or build my house, or start a web business? They all make me $, but I think they sell in much higher volumes and have more competition, bringing the price down. I also can buy an absolutely amazing novel, that probably costs a similar dollar amount to physically produce, and may have taken even much longer and more genius to create, for much less. But these (good ones) usually sell in high enough volume to bring the price down. Books sell for what the market will bear, like anything else.

All that being said, I did buy the book. I think it was well worth it. I read my poker books multiple times, some are more like reference manuals, part of my permanent library. They earn me $. So I gain much value from them. Not a problem, but I do think its interesting how their unique nature in the market has allows them to charge a higher price. Just my 2c.

As far as private coaching goes, I think it is different. That is a direct, unscaleable use of someones time. I definitely see the value in that.

Happy Reading,

“A good coach is worth his weight in gold”. I came up with that one. I have been “quoted” several times. I want royalties, as it is very true. (I didn’t really come up with it, but I want royalties anyway). I paid $600 for 6 hrs with my ex coach. I reckon he has earned me thousands). Imo a coaching session is better value than a book…a pro going through your poker mind exposing glaring leaks you are unaware of. The personal touch.

I have it. I liked it. It is for live play. He makes a few statements that are against online play. He also mentions if you want to be the best in the world you have to play online. If anything it will teach you to quit paying people off in any game.
