Hey all,

I’m fairly new to playing the game competitively and I’m trying to soak up all the useful information I can. I obviously enjoy the content on the site but I’m looking for solid book suggestions. I have read Super System 2 but that’s about the only book I’ve been able to get my hands on and a quick Google search brought up so many different titles that I don’t know where to start.  I work as a paramedic so having something to read on the long 24 hour shifts helps pass the time since the county blocks the vast majority of websites that we don’t use internally.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Anything by Ed Miller is a good start. If you can use your phone there are several ebooks out there to recommend as well.

I’ve briefly looked into his 1%, is it worth the price tag? I can absolutely use my phone or iPad if it’s an ebook, which of those do you suggest?

I have not read many of the more recent books. I do however remember liking Kill Phil and Kill Everyone.

I think the most recent I read was Moorman’s book and I thought that was pretty solid.

As a rule of thumb, I always get an author’s newest book because it’s less likely to describe concepts that no longer occur (or that occur less often).

I liked Kill Phil and Kill Everyone because Huntington put them out, and the Las Vegas Advisor is a great way to nit up some money when in Las Vegas. I even used to own the KP strategy cards. Great for someone starting out who needs help being more aggressive. Curious whether such gimmicky strategy still works 🙂

Still recommended Harrington series 1,2 and 3 as a solid foundation. If you master that series you will be playing solid tournament poker. No doubt.

Ed Miller’s Pokers 1%, as I understand it this is a book explaining game theory in NLHE. if you don’t understand game theory or its applications in NLHE, then I have heard it’s a good buy, even for the cost.

But I feel you might do just as well looking through the game theory threads here at TPE to get an idea of what is involved.

Kill Everyone is good, but not for beginners. No way I’d agree with that. Kill Phil… I bought that recently as an examination of push fold tournament strategy. It is great regarding math behind push/fold but is not a poker strategy book per se. Jonathan Little’s Secrets of Tournament Poker volume 1 and 3 are good. Give 2 a miss though.

Generally, don’t buy anything published before about 2005. Everything useful from those books is freely available on TwoPlusTwo if you look in the right places – the low stakes cash and MTT forums there are a good start.

Beyond that, Kill Everyone and Raiser’s Edge are some good starting points, Jonathan Little’s books are pretty good, and Ed Miller is good if you play a little more cash, plus it’s a great introduction to GTO ideas.

I’d also recommend Jared Tendler as essential reading in the early stages of your career – if your mental game isn’t up to scratch, your strategic approach and performance will always end up lagging behind.

Hey Matt,

you really rate KE as a good starting point? I am still trying to battle through it, although I am trying to understand every last little detail…perhaps if you are Albert Einstein (unlikely) it might get the Riceman recommendation as a good place to start, but otherwise? Freakin well forget about it! That is some complicated math going on over there! Frankly, I feel anyone who is starting out will be turned off cold by the complexity of the theory involved in KE…for sure it turns me off, and I would hardly call myself a beginner! Then again, maybe I am just slow with this stuff.

KE is an advanced tome, I doubt too many people who have really made the effort to understand every detail would disagree. Then again as I said, possibly I am just slow with the math.

Honestly? That book does my nut, and whilst I consider myself halfway through it, I would have to say it is hard going.

For a beginner? Little’s books are far more suitable imho.

I defer to your professional opinion, however…(don’t listen to the Riceman, I am a confirmed loser in this game even after years of serious study and application lol!).
